From Gary Roberts
The third week of racing at Sideways Saturdays Speedway, at Cal Expo
arena, in Sacramento. The track took a while to even out, then there
were some great races. Just as the track at Cal Expo gets better every
week, so does the racing. .
Scratch Main 1. Bobby Hedden 2. Billy Janniro 3. Bart Bast 4. Ian Ferris
Bobby Hedden made a rocket start, anticipating the tapes perfectly. Billy Janniro pushed him all the way, but was unable to get past.
Scratch Consi 1. Chad Felicio 2. Robert Curry 3. Bob Hicks 4. Steve Martynse Handicap Main 1. Ian Ferris 2. Chad Felicio 3. Bobby Hedden 4. Bart Bast 5. Billy Janniro 6. Robert Curry
The race was stopped after less than a lap as 30 yard men Ferris and Curry went down on the exit of turn 2. Curry was deemed the cause, and penalized a further 10 yards. This gave Ian Ferris the space he needed to establish a good lead and allow the battle to take place behind him. Second finisher Chad Felicio (40 yard start handicap) acted as a good isolator for Ian, and managed to hold back the other three 50 yard riders.
Handicap Consi 1. Bob Hicks 2. Steve Martynse 3. Marvin Sonnier 4. Rick Shafer 5. Scott Olney
Paul Orlandi also qualified for this race but was a non starter.
Div 2 Main 1. Ivan Sevart 2. Vince Bertolucci 3. Robert Mellor 4. Harlan Bast Snr. 5. Richard Powell 6. Kevin Fereira 7. Greg Howell 8. Dave Booth
Popular Ivan Sevart took home yet another trophy after battling from the 10 yard line. I would expect to see him on the 20 next week.
Div 2 Consi 1. Greg Hooten Snr. 2. Mark Thomas 3. Shawn Eldridge 4. Tom Adams 5. Derek Silva 6. Bill Dixon 7. Jon Curry 8. Devin Devreece Div 3 Main 1. Billy Hiles 2. Mike Hooten 3. Dino Blankenbiller 4. Kelly McBane 5. Gary Hubberts 6. Luke Rogers Div 3 Consi 1. Eric Ryan 2. Geno Bellino 3. Les Veale 4. Jason CUmmings 5. Chuck Bagwell 6. Tom Castagnola 7. Brian Leventon 8. Kimi Valentine Junior Div 1 1. Greg Hooten Jnr. 2. Bryan Yarrow 3. JJ Martynse 4. JT Mabry Junior Div 2. 1. Chris Olney 2. TJ Fowler 3. Danny Easley 4. Paul Johnson Junior Div 3 1. Bruce Bast 2. Jeff Butler 3. Chris Smith Tom Fehrman fell.
The crowd looked bigger than last week, but still fell short of what is
needed for this promotion to break even on costs. After the races, a lot
of enthusiastic SOSS (Save our Sideways Saturdays) campaigners left with
posters and flyers to distribute throughout the area. Hopefully this
will bring some new folks into the stadium over the forthcoming weeks.
