Harley Night
June 5, 2010
By: Ryan Evans

Gary Hicks capped a perfect night by winning the main event in front of a large crowd on Harley Night at the world famous Costa Mesa Speedway.

Hicks exploded into the lead at the start of the main event while Jimmy Fishback, Mike Faria, and Tyson Burmeister bumped into each other and all went wide. Charlie “The Edge” Venegas avoided contact with them and cutback underneath to take second. Hicks was flawless, however, and Venegas was never afforded an opportunity to get the lead. Hicks was first to the checkered flag, Venegas finished second, Fishback was third, Burmeister finished fourth, and Faria was fifth.

Venegas opened the heats with a victory over John Marquez. “Fast” Eddie Castro held off Faria to win the second heat. Fishback defeated Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz in the third heat. Hicks chased McConnell before making a brilliant outside pass for the lead and the win to end round one.

Hicks made it two in a row with a win over Doug Nicol and Venegas to start round two. Tyson Burmeister defeated Faria to win the next heat. Castro made it two in a row with a win over Schwartz in event 11. Fishback ended the second round with a win over McConnell.

Fishback remained perfect by defeating Venegas to begin the final round. Hicks chased and passed Faria in the next heat to also stay undefeated. Buck Blair beat Schwartz in the penultimate heat. Castro used the outside to pass Burmeister for the win in the final heat to match the perfect scores of Fishback and Hicks.

Venegas blazed to the win in the first semi and was followed into the main by Fishback. Hicks and Faria finished one-two in the second semi to transfer to the main event. Burmeister scored an impressive victory in the Last Chance to book the final spot in the main event.

The Support Main Event required three starts but John Stunkard led all three, including the most important one, and claimed the victory. Rudy Laurer finished second, Geoff Herkner was third, Ryan Tovatt finished fourth, and Damon Barry was fifth.

Aaron Fox put together four smooth laps to win the Support B Main Event. Norman Graham finished second, Mike Salyer was third, Jake Myers finished fourth, and Mike Boyle was fifth.

National Champions Joe Jones and Jimmy Olsen showed why they hold the crown by winning the Sidecar Main Event. Gerard Jackson and Dave German finished second, Shawn Driggers and Casey Driggers were third, and Brian Motis and Edwin Soto finished fourth.

Harley Night included the ever-popular Harley Races which feature people racing their street-legal Harleys around the bullring oval. Next week’s event is the Mission Motorsports John Matherson Cup.
