Max Ruml dominates Finale taking Scratch and Handicap Victories!
Pirate Speedway Winter Series Round #4
Story by Scott "The Torch" Read
SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA, MARCH 30, 2013

Pirate Speedway saw the curtain fall on the Winter Series and anticipation for the regular season opener April 19th looming closer. A great winter of racing was held during the series that had ideal weather conditions, with the exception of one rain-out, that being winter series 2.

Max Ruml the 16 year old speedway sensation over came a field of talented riders, to win in dominant fashion at Winter Series Round 4. In what culminated in a virtual re-match of the Winter Series 3 showdown between Ruml and Russell Green, ultimately was not to be. At WS3, Ruml took the Scratch Main Win, and Green took the Handicap Main Win, splitting the top honors. Winter Series 4 thrilled fans with some of the top racing of the winter. The Finale here at Pirate Speedway saw Max Ruml taking the leading roll, and was never seriously challenged throughout the days heat races, and especially in the Scratch and Handicap Main events.

The four-lap Scratch Main event saw another young gun, Joey "The Bolt" Holt take the lead on a hole-shot at the starting gate. By lap two, Ruml had taken the lead, Russell Green had taken the two spot, Holt in third, Troy McConnell in fourth, and Kayle LeoGrande in fifth spot. The final lap order did not change.

The five-lap Handicap Main event saw Ruml take the gate, and then shoot out into the lead right from the start. Increasing his lead, it was definitely Max's day to remember. The chequered flag saw Max Ruml take the Win, Troy McConnell second, Russell Green took third, Steve "Rattlesnake" Bowen fourth, Paul Sanburn fifth.

Pee Wee class racing mixing it up during the heat races. "Lightning" Luke Whitcomb took two heat wins and the Main event, Nick Dunn took the heat 7 win and second in the Main, Jake Troutt celebrated his fifth birthday with a solid day of riding and finishing third in the Main. Jason Palmese in his first career race kept the bike up-right and finished fourth in the Main.

150 Mini class racing action saw Courtney Crone nearly have a clean sweep of the days racing. Crone had two heat Wins and the Main Event Win. Finishing second in the Main was Michael Wells. Sebastian Palmese had a third place in the Main. Maverick Molloy had a heat win and took fourth in the Main. Dakota Shockley did not start the Main.

250 Junior class racing action had some of the most competitive speedway of the day. After the start of the first heat, Braydan Galvin was involved in a spectacular crash after contact with other riders. Galvin thus being forced to the outside, launching himself into and over the turn two wall. As of press time Galvin has had successful surgery on his right foot and is back home recovering comfortably. Best wishes for speedy recovery of a fine young rider. On the restart of that heat 6, Dillon Ruml took the win, Kurtis Hamill finished second, Dalton Leedy took third, Dryden Gayle fourth. The Main Event went to Hamill, showing the classic riding style of his Dad ( Billy ), poured it on when it counted, taking heat two, and taking the Main Win. Gayle taking his first ever heat Win and followed up that with a solid second in the Main. D. Ruml took a heat Win and third in the Main. Hayley Perrault finished fourth in the Main. Dalton Leedy ran mid-pack most of the day, and took a fifth in the Main.

Support classes were stacked to the maximum with top riders. Tom Bryant was running mid-pack during the heats and stepped it up when it counted, going around a competitor on lap three to lead the following two laps and take the Main Event Win. Finishing second in the Main was Kurt Kornchuk, from Northern California and running the California Olive Oil Company colors, his first time at a Pirate Winter Series race. Third in the Main was Dillon Osborne, having a great day at Pirate. Took two heat wins, but had to settle for third in the final.

Last Chance Qualifier heat saw Pirate fan favorites face-off for one spot to go to the Scratch Main Event. Joey Holt, again, with what is becoming his specialty : a hole-shot off the gate, lead wire to wire, to take the LCQ and went to the Main where he finished third. Rudy Laurer, had two seconds in the days heat racing, had to settle for a second in the LCQ too, in his bid to go to the Main. "Rattlesnake" Steve Bowen had two seconds and two thirds during heat racing and took third here. Fourth went to "Rowdy" Ronnie Davis, toughing it out in Division 1 for the day.

So...The Curtain fell on Winter Series 4, 2013...

The Sails are set for the Grand Opening of Pirate Speedway's season opener April 19th ...Be...There !
