National Champ Chris Hesmer made his season debut and rattled off four straight wins in his qualifying
heats. However the D1 final was a different story. In a D2 heat his younger brother Aaron crashed hard,
yards from the finish line, and wrecked the bike they were sharing. Riding a borrowed bike in the final, Chris
missed the gate and had to settle for third place. The happy winner on a heavy track was cousin
Gary Hesmer,
who held off a spirited challenge from Fred Legault to win his first Main for some time.
If you live in Gary's hometown of Mississauga, you may have seen him often on
Rogers Cable 10 in filmed interview at the Paris track!
For the second week in a row, a rider completed the D2 Main / Handicap double. This time it was Joe Heye's turn to be in the limelight. He led the handicap event from the gate and looked a likely winner when Casey Franic and Byron Ambo tangled and brought about a restart. Undeterred the youngster shot out of the gate again on the restart, and held off a determined late challenge from John Mercier to win and join Franic on the 10 yard-line next week. The incident sidelined Franic for the rest of the night with a foot injury and ended a tight battle for D2 honours which this week were based on total points over the evening. Heye went on to win comfortably and complete his double.
American Russell Hartke took the D3 main and his first checkered flag in Canada ahead of Lawrence Hacking.
