Jeff Orosz - Champion of the Night

By Duncan Luke. luke99@idirect.com

Three riders from the Owego area, fan favorite Bruce Nelson, Jeremy Parsons and Jerry Harmon, were welcome visitors and added spice to this week’s program or at least to the second half of it. Nelson had bike problems and only managed one lap in his first two outings. After that it was the vintage, "Bruce the Mongoose", that Canadian fans have learned to appreciate over the years. He produced a devastating final lap in his last qualifying heat. He rode around Fred Legault at turns one and two and then found a perfect inside line out of turn four to whip past leader Andy Harris on the run to the line in what was definitely the ride of the night.

He then rocketed from the gate in the final only to be called back and penalized 10 yards by the referee for rolling before the tapes went up. Although he came through to third place on the second lap the penalty was too much to overcome and Jeff Orosz took the win from a hard charging Chris Hesmer.

D2 riders Parsons and Harmon were first time visitors and the meeting was half over before they found their way to the track. Despite this, and due to their willingness to ride at any opportunity, they still managed four rides each in the meeting. This included riding in D1 events and Parsons came away with a victory in the D1 Consol. They made a good impression and hopefully will be back before the season is over.

The highlight in D2 was the performance by John Dmytrow. Going into the meeting he needed nine points to reach the 500-career points plateau. Two wins and a second in the qualifying heats left him one point shy going into the final. An emphatic win put him over the top to his evident delight which might have had something to do with him winning a $10 bonus from a fan for the best wheelie of the evening!

Other notable efforts were an excellent laydown by Gary Hesmer to avoid a potentially nasty accident, a hard charging handicap main ride by Jeff Orosz and a lesson on flag knowledge for the D3 riders. When the yellow warning flag was displayed, due to a fallen rider, race leader Frank Dittmer almost came to a stop allowing Jeremy Musson to nip past for the race win which also brought him D3 honors for the night. A tough way to learn a lesson but probably one that will not be forgotten.
