Dave started moving up in Division 2 in 1997, with two events at Fast Fridays in Auburn. His first event at Santa Maria had him 3rd in the points and made it into the 'A' Final. Gary Roberts reported: "Dave Booth overslid in turn 3 of the first lap and Kitt Nay had nowhere to go but straight into him. Both fell heavily, and Dave declined joining the restart. He called in at the hospital after the races and discovered he had a broken shoulder and a broken kneecap. " His return to the track in October showed he recovered quickly, with a 2nd finish in the 'C' Final.
