Southern California Averages and Rankings

Steve Evans, who helped to organize the Dream Team tour has taken it upon himself to develop an average and ranking system for Southern California. Steve is a lifelong speedway fan who moved here from England several years ago.

American sports are very stat happy - batting averages, RBI's, Rushing Yards, Rebound Average, etc etc. It seems odd then that speedway does not have such stats. Costa Mesa, I believe, no longer has points (even when they did, the fans had no idea how points were scored!). Industry does, but they are not published, more for the riders, not the fans.
With the help of Ryan Evans, who went to great lengths to provide me the finishing order of every D1 race in SoCal this year, I have compiled a system of point averages per meeting. The system is as follows;

4 Man Scratch Heats / Semis / Consis 3,2,1,0. 4
Main Main 7,6,5,4
5 Man Scratch Heats / Semis 4,3,2,1,0
5 Man Main 7,6,5,4,3
LCQ 2nd - 4th 2,1,0
Handicap Heats 3, 2.5, 2, 1.5, 1, 0.5
Handicap Main 4, 3.5, 3, 2.5, 2, 1.5, 1, 0.5

With every Division 1 race at Costa Mesa / Industry, this is how it pans out. Whilst no system of stats can ever be 100% accurate (doesn't account for bike trouble, bad referee call, etc.), the positioning of riders seems about in the right area, even if we could probably argue all night who should be exactly where. The only place we'd ever settle it is on the track. The averages system is used here as using points would create a lopsided table - some riders specialize in one or other track, injuries and suspension would also affect certain riders.

R = Rookie Div 1 Rider. # of meetings in parentheses

Mike Faria has won 2/3 of the scratch events he has entered! His average is tarnished by a failure to transfer on June 4th. My money is on him taking the #1 from Manny by season's end.
Next update will be in 2 weeks

(July 30) Here is an update of the averages system I posted 2 weeks ago - the last 2 meets at Industry have been added.

CENTRAL COAST PRACTICE SESSION

April 5, 2005
There will be a practice session in Santa Maria on Saturday, April 23. The track is owned by former Second Division Rider, and Santa Maria promoter, John Vander Muelen. John has taken a leave from speedway the last several years because he owns his own t-shirt company. The track is similar in size to Costa Mesa. Anyone looking to practice on an excellent d.g. track to get ready for Costa Mesa should consider going to Santa Maria. Anyone that is interested in going can contact Malcolm Roe at mroe@fix.netor call John at 805 937 8485.
