Subject: Gosford Speedway Closure??
Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2000 17:46:35 +1000

A little bird has whispered that the Gosford City Speedway here in Australia
may be on the verge of closing. Can anyone shed some light on this rather
disturbing rumour and trend that is occurring in Australian Domestic
Speedway.
Cheers Anth Mac

Sean gets the meeting off to a good start by outpacing Stoney from the tapes to win heat 1. Lee
Smethills makes a good start to heat 2, and once James had shrugged off a spirited challenge from
Darren Groves he gave chase to the leader. Trying an outside pass around Adam on lap 3 James lifted in
mid bend and went hurtling into the fence under full power. When the paramedics reached him he was
unconscious and not breathing, his airway being blocked by his tongue. After receiving on-the-spot
attention James left the track conscious and moving his arms, but the meeting was delayed until the
doctor and ambulance returned from the hospital.
Robbie lead heat 3 until his machine expired with Simon C tailed off at the back. Simon S was the
convincing winner of heat 4 but Brent passed Adam on the 4th turn, and a slowing Adam just holds out
Lee Smethills for the odd point. Robbie and Carl both went for the outside drive on the 2nd turn in heat
5 and it was Carl who clattered into the fence. Another long delay with Carl stretchered off as a
precautionary measure. In the rerun Robbie sits on Barry on the first turn allowing Simon to sweep into
the lead. Robbie then shepherds him home for the 5-1.
Sean and Lee give a display of high speed team riding to win heat 6 and the Tigers are looking more
comfortable. Simon S easily wins heat 7 but Adam's second bike expires at the back. Paul swoops
around tac-sub Mick Powell to win heat 8, but Adam is over cautious on his cousins spare machine.
Robbie takes heat 9 with ease but Simon C is passed easily by Darren on lap 3.
Sean streaks away to win heat 10 but the gremlins continue and this time it's Paul who goes from
challenging Mick Powell for 2nd to holding out Peter in 3rd before grinding to a halt. Stoney wins heat
11 looking his normal self with Simon S not able to match his pace. Adam (on Simon's bike again) slows
into turn 3 to allow Barry into 3rd place. With a 4 point lead it all points to a cracker-jack ending.
Robbie streaks away to win heat 12 and Adam is getting the hang of Simon's GM and is resisting strong
pressure from Darren to hold onto 3rd place when disaster strikes. Entering turn 3 the GM drops a con-
rod and Adam falls. Darren tries to take evasive action but clips Adam on the way past and falls untidily
into the fence. With the time at 21:50 and a 22:00 curfew, and the ambulance leaving the stadium for
another trip to hospital the referee has no option but to abandon the meeting.

Rocky Robinson Update of Land Speed Record attempt in
Australia...

BUB Enterprise will be posting information about the
Australian experience at: http://www.bubent.com/.
The Dry Lakes web site is:
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~dlra/.

In the meantime I finally talked to Rocky to get some
information as to what happened while down under. As
some of you know they were not able to break the
record because the engine blew up. All the web site
had posted was that the driver was unhurt!!! Well
fortunately Rocky, being the racer he is, held
everything together and stopped the streamliner
without incident.

Rocky was accelerating towards the 3-4 mile mark and
was running at 296 mph and climbing when the engine
let go. A rod went through the case (the engine kept
running although there was no power). The timing
lights are between mile 5 & 6, and Rocky took the
measured mile at 289 mph while slowing down. So the
record would have been shattered to smithereens if the
rod had held on for another 30 seconds. Rocky said
that to slow down and use the high-speed chute he has
to have the throttle on and that’s how he knew the
engine was still running. Rocky said his former
racing experience really paid off with the knowledge
of 'not to panic' when things went downhill. When the
high-speed chute deployed he felt a tremendous shake
like getting kicked in the side but kept it going
straight. When the main chute deployed and the bike
began to actually slow down somewhat smoke started
getting into the cockpit making Rocky just a little
nervous. Rocky said it took a long time for the
streamliner to stop. The Dry Lake Racetrack in
Australia does not have chase cars so by the time the
motorhomes caught up with Rocky he was out of the
cockpit breathing fresh air surveying the mess he left
on the track (which was cleaned up). The smoke was
created from the oil leak when the rod when through
the case.

They have another engine available so this summer
(August) they will be going to Bonneville for testing
and probably return to Australia next year for another
attempt. I found out that the salt at Bonneville is
not what it use to be and the high speed runs can not
be made very easily because of the track conditions.
Apparently the salt is so thin from harvesting the
salt that dirt is showing through and it is getting
more and more difficult to build a long enough track
(around 10 miles).

Rocky said he picked up a trophy racing go-carts on an
indoor track of all things and he really appreciated
the friendliness of the Australians. He said that
eating kangaroo was way overrated and enjoyed the
large guards on the front of every vehicle to protect
them from hitting the wild kangaroos. It sounded like
the whole crew had a good experience while down under
and only the engine letting go soured the trip
somewhat.

Thanks to Kevin for postiong the heat details. Just a few thoughts to add on
the meeting.

I thought for an individual meeting it was a good one. I generally don't
like them but this was pretty good. Dugard was heading only by the Dryml's
in Heat 6 but he picked them both off. Wiltshire showed a spirit from the
back which was good to see and Johnston's rich vein of form continues.
Hancock never seemed at his best.

For the others, Ferjan started like he was going to win it, he won his frist
3 races by a streak but got in a sandwich in the semi final and was unable
to recover. Hare was excellent, showing he still knowws the best way round
Cowley when beating Nilsen adn Steachmann in Heat 4and heading Hancock for 3
laps in Heat 11 and then again beating Nilsen in the semi.

The Drymls's are improving with Lukas in particular looking the paer and
Roman Povazhny showed why he is going to be such a favourite at Oxford.
Staek, Topinka were both good value and Adam Shields was certainly not
disgraced in this compnay being generally competitive. Frank Smart agained
struggled oin the Oxford track and Henriksson was off the pace, being
comprehensively beaten by Jon Underwood.

A decent meeting in front of a pretty poor crowd which dod give some of the
Oxford boys valuable race practice at Cowley, unfortunately Martin Dugard
got it to before Eastbourne's visit next week

Few listees there tonight. Steve Ruskin with Tom, Staek (obviously), I
assume Enzville and Did I spot Bob Radford hiding in the bar ??
