Subject: Match Report: Glasgow 45 Edinburgh 44

Glasgow Tigers 45: Edinburgh Monarchs 44

Premier National Trophy
Saracen Park, Ashfield
Sunday 30th April 2000

Edinburgh missed out following a last heat decider after leading from the
start. Edinburgh went into the last heat with a one-point advantage but
James Grieves and Les Collins took a 4-2 off Peter Carr and Robert Eriksson.

It was a match that Monarchs should have won. Five of the Edinburgh team
won races amounting to ten out of fifteen heats. A number of points were
thrown away with Kevin Little blowing an engine when second and Christian
Henry suffering two engine failures in heats where he should have scored.
It was two late tape offenses that probably cost Edinburgh the match. Peter
Carr was penalized in heat 13 and was replaced by Christian Henry. This
possibly cost Edinburgh a 5-1. Then in heat 14, Christian Henry touched the
tapes and had to go from 15m back and ran last behind Aidan Collins who he
had already beaten twice.

As in the previous encounter the meeting was notable for a lot of 3-3 tied
heats generally won by an Edinburgh rider.
Edinburgh were unchanged while Glasgow put in former Sheffield rider James
Birkinshaw for in the injured Scott Courtney.
Monarchs' captain Peter Carr lost the toss. Gate position A was in used
with Glasgow off 1 and 3 for the first heat.

Heat 1: Robert Eriksson, James Grieves, Blair Scott [60.6]
James Grieves gated but was pressured by Robert Eriksson. Both Sean
Courtney and Blair Scott developed problems. Sean retired but Blair limped
round to finish. Grieves held out Eriksson for a couple of laps until
Robert produced a great inside pass to win in a very fast time.
(2-4) (2-4)

Heat 2: Christian Henry, Aidan Collins, James Birkinshaw, Brian Turner [62.5]
Brian Turner lifted at the start but Christian Henry stormed ahead to win
in impressive style from Aidan Collins.
(3-3) (5-7)

Heat 3: Kevin Little, Emiliano Sanchez, Richard Juul, Ross Brady [61.1]
Kevin Little made the start and held off Sanchez without any real problems.
Ross Brady struggled along at the back with an engine sounding like a
tractor.
(3-3) (8-10)

Heat 4: Les Collins, Peter Carr, Christian Henry, James Birkinshaw [60.5]
Les Collins got the drop on Peter Carr to secure a heat win for Glasgow but
Christian Henry took an easy third place.
(3-3) (11-13)

Heat 5: Robert Eriksson, Emiliano Sanchez, Richard Juul, Blair Scott [61.3]
Eriksson made the start ahead of Sanchez and Scott. Sanchez nearly lost
things on the fourth bend. He made a brilliant recovery but balked Juul and
Scott. The Dane came off best and secured third place.
(3-3) (14-16)

Heat 6: Peter Carr, James Grieves, Sean Courtney, Brian Turner [60.1]
Peter Carr won from James Grieves in a time only 0.1 seconds outside the
track record. Sean Courtney beat Brian Turner.
(3-3) (17-19)

Heat 7: Kevin Little, Les Collins, Aidan Collins, Ross Brady [61.2]
Kevin Little continued his fine form with a win over Les Collins from the
gate. Ross Brady made a good start but soon faded and dropped to last with
a decidedly agricultural sounding motor.
(3-3) (20-22)

Heat 8: Blair Scott, Aidan Collins, Sean Courtney [62.5]
Aidan Collins replaced James Birkinshaw as a reserve change. Blair Scott
and Christian Henry made the start but Henry stopped with engine problems.
Blair Scott held on to win without difficulty.
(3-3) (23-25)

Heat 9: Peter Carr, Richard Juul [Awarded]
Peter Carr gated ahead of Juul and Sanchez. Brian Turner stopped as Sanchez
took up the chase. Emiliano overdid things and hit the second bend fence
causing the heat to be awarded.
(2-3) (25-28)

Heat 10: James Grieves, Christian Henry, Aidan Collins [61.5]
Edinburgh brought in Christian Henry to replace Ross Brady while Aidan
Collins replaced Sean Courtney. James Grieves rounded Kevin Little on the
second bend to lead with Henry third. Kevin was still in contention when
his engine blew up.
(4-2) (29-30)

Heat 11: Robert Eriksson, Les Collins, Blair Scott, James Birkinshaw [61.4]
James Birkinshaw replaced Aidan Collins to complete his three rides. Les
Collins made the start but Eriksson produced a tremendous outside pass to
maintain his 100% record.
(2-4) (31-34)

Heat 12: Richard Juul, Kevin Little, Aidan Collins [62.4]
Edinburgh brought in Christian Henry for Brian Turner as a reserve change
while Glasgow put in Aidan Collins for Birkinshaw. Christian Henry suffered
an engine failure on the start line. Kevin Little was outgated by Juul to
come second.
(4-2) (35-36)

Heat 13: Robert Eriksson, James Grieves, Christian Henry, Les Collins [61.9]
Peter Carr was excluded for tape touching with Monarchs opting to replace
him with Christian Henry. Les Collins made the start and led from Robert
Eriksson and James Grieves. Les suffered a puncture leaving Eriksson and
Grieves to battle it out. Grieves seemed to have got ahead coming off the
last bend but Eriksson on the wider line had enough grip to win. Christian
Henry was never far behind and took third ahead of Collins who limped home.
(2-4) (37-40)

Heat 14: Emiliano Sanchez, Ross Brady, Aidan Collins, Chrsitain Henry [62.3]
Christian Henry fell foul of the tape touching rue but remained in the heat
penalized by 15 metres. Ross Brady made the gate but was eventually
overhauled by Sanchez. Christian Henry made up some ground on Collins but
couldn't quite get in touch
(4-2) (41-42)

Heat 15: James Grieves, Peter Carr, Les Collins, Robert Eriksson [61.2]
Glasgow won the toss for gate position. Grieves made the start ahead of
Carr with Collins third. This remained with the track now rather dusty and
passing less likely.
(4-2) (45-44)

Edinburgh, or at least five riders, performed well despite the loss.
Eriksson looked unbeatable until he ran last in the deciding heat 15.
Robert also produced most of the passing on a track which offered less
encouragement than usual. Carr was also strong but dropped points after a
tape exclusion. Kevin Little was ingreat form until blowing his engine.
Christian Henry and Blair Scott also recorded heat wins. Christian did miss
out through two engine failures and a tape penalty in heat 14. He can be
pleased with his after noon after beating Aidan Collins twice on the track
although losing to him when penalized 15 metres.

Ross Brady had a poor afternoon and seemed to be suffering engine problems.
He ran last twice and was replaced in his third ride before coming back
with a second place in heat 14. Brian Turner never looked like scoring on a
track where until recently he was joint track record holder.

Glasgow produced points across the board apart from Sean Courtney and James
Birkinshaw. While they lacked the power to win heats they genrally picked
up the minor points to stay in contention when Edinburgh gifted them the
match with the two tape touchings.

Man of the match: James Grieves
Most exciting rider: Robert Eriksson
Next meeting: v Glasgow, Premier National Trophy, Armadale on Friday 5th

Subject: Terenzano 30.4.2000 - Details
Date: Mon, 1 May 2000 20:45:27 +0200

Double Under 19 European champion Rafal Okoniewski won the opening round of
the individual world championship scoring 13 points at Terenzano on Sunday
30th April.
He had to face a run-off after fellow countryman Adam Skornicki defeated him
in heat 18 level pegging on 13. But the blonde Wolverhampton rider didn't
take the opportunity and after touching the tapes in heat 22 was excluded by
English referee Mick Possewhite giving the victory to Okoniewski.
Third on the rostrum was home favourite Italian reigning champion Andrea
Maida who dropped his three points to the two Polish riders and to the
Russian Rinat Mardanshin finishing solitary on 12 points.
With 9 qualifying places plus one reserve available, Zlatko Krznaric,
Alessandro Dalla Valle, Zoltan Adorjan and Bohumil Brhel comfortably booked
their places for the semi-finals while a for-man run-off had to be held to
determine the last 2 qualifiers.
Lukas Dryml won ahead of Simone Terenzani while world Under 21 runner up
Ales Dryml managed only third and will travel either to Gdank (PL) or
Olching (D) as reserve.
None of the three Russians managed to make any kind of impression and the
same happened for the two French who score only 4 points between them.

Subject: Re: [speedway] Reading 46 Newport 43
Date: Mon, 1 May 2000 16:16:30 +0100
READING 46 NEWPORT 43
(National Trophy - bonus to Newport 90-88)

Highly entertaining - if slick - Monday morning meeting in which Newport
looked dead and buried at 17-7 down after 4 only to pull back to 24-24 by
heat 8.

The slick conditions in the latter stages suited Wasps guest Gary Corbett
down to the ground and - amazingly - he outscored Andy Appleton's 6+1 of the
previous week!

Reading had Shane Colvin to thank for victory - his superb 12+1 put the
Racers heat leaders to shame. Racers' heat leaders were again all struggling
out of the gate and only scored a win apiece.

Krister Marsh crashed in heat 14 dislocating a shoulder. Hopefully he will
be fit for next week.

Reading

1 Armando Castagna 3 1' 2 2 2 10+ 1
(Soooo frustrating! Cannot be faulted for effort but even when he wins he
looks so slow.
Passed by Ben Howe in heat 13 and 15 - Reading need him on better form than
this.
The track obviously didn't suit him - but conditions were the same for
everyone and GP riders should surely be up to riding anything...
Rode his heart out in heat 15 - and to be honest won the match for Reading
when he edged out Henriksson after being passed by Howe)

2 Paul Clews 1 2 M 1' 4+ 1
(Poor meeting for Paul - at least they are rare these days. He can look poor
when it gets slick but did well in heat 10 to pass Neath.
Let Newport well and truely back into the meeting by contriving to get
excluded in the important heat 8 under 2 mins. Resulting 2-4 costly for
Reading as Newport drew level)

3 Phil Morris 2' 1 2' 3 1' 9+ 3
(Did he gate at all all day??
Leaves himself so much to do - but provides top quality entertainment.
Highlights this week - passing Taylor then Howe in heat 15. A magnificent
last bend pass of Corbett in heat 12 and a terrific last race when he
squeezed under Henriksson when the Swede was on the verge of passing
Castagna)

4 Krister Marsh 3 0 3 FX 6
(Superb when gating - big heat 3 and 9 wins. Perhaps should have settled for
2nd in heat 14 when trying an optimistic bomb around Neath on turn 3.
Still - he's trying hard and perhaps shouldn't be criticised too harshly.)

5 Per Wester 3 1 1' 0 5+ 1
(Looked far from his best - I understand it was engine problems rather than
fitness.
It was a luxury having a maximum scorer last week and Per just didn't have
the same speed from the tapes with the slick conditions catching him out.
A vital fighting third in heat 11 over Taylor showed there was some life
left in him.
Can't believe people criticise a man who was unconscious on the Blunsdon
track only 4 days ago.....)

6 Marc Norris 0 NS 0 0
(Ohh dear oh dear.
I fear Marc is on borrowed time now - he's still a handful in the pits I
understand and scoring 0 only adds to the pressure on him)

7 Shane Colvin 3 2' 2 2 1 2 12+ 1
(Probably the only reading rider who took the conditions in his stride and
you have to wonder why that is...
Shane was superb - the highlight being his paid heat 4 win over Ben Howe
when the track wasn't ultra slick.
His four other rides were all well taken - he was quick and unflappable. Had
the beating of potential Wasps match winner Craig Taylor every tim they
raced. Deserves a huge amount of credit not only for his score but the way
in which he passed Herne in heat 14)

Newport

1 Anders Henriksson 2 3 3 1 0 9
(Quality all action all entertaining show from Anders. In fact the score
does him little justice. Scored twice as any heat wins as a Reading heat
leader!!!)

2 Jon Armstrong r/r
(r/r got zero - )

3 Gary Corbett (G) F FX 2' 3 2 7+ 1
(After struggling around for two rides Corbett went crazy with wins over
Wester and Castagna which had Reading really struggling. A superb last bend
effort from Phil Morris was required to stop his run of wins in race 12)

4 Chris Neath 1 2' 3 3 0 3 12 1
(Wonderful effort from Neath - very quick from the tapes and Reading
struggled to hold onto him when he trapped. Vitally passed by both Clews and
Castagna in heat 10 when Corbett was away..)

5 Ben Howe 1 3 R 3 3 10
( I never would have thought of Howe as a slick track rider but he looked
comfortable - twice flying past Castagna in the latter stages. Passed well
by Morris in heat 9)

6 Craig Taylor 2 0 1 0 0 3
(If Colvin won Reading the match - a sorry display by Taylor almost
certainly cost Newport the points. His only points at Reading's expense came
in heat 2 against uncompetitive Norris.)

7 Lee Herne 1' 0 1 FX 2+ 1
(A mixed match. Trounced misfiring Norris in his first, finished nearly half
a lap behind in his next, then held out Norris again despite the Racer
crawling all over him, then nerly turned the match by leading Colvin at the
seocnd attempt in heat 14. But the attention of Colvin seemed to much for
him and he seemed to have difficulty weighing up the first turn entrance)

So a cracking little match - one in which Reading expected to win by 50+ and
in the end they lost the bonus.

Reading still desperately need consistantcy from their top two - but still
keep looking good in the second string and now reserve depts..
