Heat 1
Paul Thorp gated and looked very quick, not really giving Wilson a chance to
get close, at the back Rene Aas looked awfule, very slow behind Cartwright,
until on the last lap Cartwright fell on the second bend and Aas collided
with the prone rider.
Heat 2
Mike Smith got out first and flew into a good lead ahead of Burkinshaw,
Allot was at the back behind Jamie Smith, who looked uncomfortable on the
first/second bend all night, he made a mistake and allowed Allot through
into third place
Heat 3
Paul Smith and Lee Dicken got out into a 5-1, but Lee looked awful trying to
team ride behind Paul Smith, he was looking around to see where the
SHeffield riders where and lost control slightly on the second bend and let
Stead through for second.
Heat 4
First attempt, Car and Kessler tanglerd going into the first bend send Carr
into the fence, slight delay in the ru-run whilst Carr had grit removed from
his eye.
In the re-run, Carr gated weel and won pretty easily in the best time of the
night
Heat 5
Paul Smith and Lee Dicken had no answer to Sean Wilsons speed
Heat 6
Kessler gated ahead of Thorp and Aas, and was completely untroubled until
the last bend where his bike gave up,turning a 3-3 into a Hull 5-1
Heat 7
Heat of the night, Stead gated in front of Carr, who chased hard and got
under Stead a couple of time with Stead repassing comnig out of the bends.
At the start of the third lap, Carr went under Stead more forcefully,
forcing Stead to give ground and allow Carr though. oth Stead and Carr where
trying these moves at speed.
Heat 8
Tac Sub appearance for Wilson, Wilson and Allot gated ahead of Aas and Jamie
Smith, who proceeded to make Allot look like a world class rider, never
getting anywherer near him.
Heat 9
Paul Smith and Lee Dicken could get near Robbie Kessler
Heat 10
Paul Thorp gated well with Paul Lee, and a good first bend from both, saw
Paul Thorp come out in front, though at one point he nearly lost it and came
off, it must have been the shock of seeing Paul Lee riding well
Heat 11
Sean Wilson gated from Peter Carr, who for four laps tried almost everything
to get inside Wilson, almost losing it on more than one occassion. The best
part was the slow down lap, where Wilson and Carr seemed to be having a
brilliant time working out how Carr had stayed on at one point.
Heat 12
Superb gate from Mike Smith, who kept Stead behind and won
Heat 13
Kessler gated ahead of Thorp with Carr third and Wilson fourth, Throp tried
a few things but never really looked like passing Kessler
Heat 14
Tac Sub appearance for Kessler, who duly obliged and won the race quite
easliy, though Mike Smith nearly got past on the first turn and looked quite
quick chasing Kessler, the only problem for Sheffield was that Paul Lee
trailed in last
Heat 15
A ru-run of heat 13, on the first attempt Kessler and Wilson where on a 5-1
(i think, it could have been a 4-2) and Kessler went down on the third turn,
causing the race to be stopped.
In the re-run Thorp gated and never looked like being caught.
For Hull Thorp was outstanding, ably supported by Mike Smith and Peter Carr,
Lee Dicken and Paul Smith were steady, Jamie Smith looked very ill at ease
on the track, dissapointing after his promising home debut against Newport.
Rene Aas was dreadful, his score of 4+1 should have read 2 (0110) but was
helped by Cartwright falling and gifting him a point, and then Kessler
stopping gifting him a paid win.
For Sheffield Kessler and Wilson where excellent, Stead rode a lot better
the the PNT match, Paul Lee showed flashes of what he can do, Burkinshaw and
Allot looked OK (Allots win apart) and Cartwright was awful, and at the
moment I can't see him being in the Sheffield team much longer.

On a superbly prepared racing surface King's Lynn literally blitzed apart
second in the table Eastbourne with a quite brilliant display.
A large crowd obviously anticipated a close tussle between the top two
pacesetters in the Elite League and there was certainly no hint of what
was to come as visiting No.1 Martin Dugard outpaced guest Todd Wiltshire
and Travis McGowan in the opener.
What was to come then though was amazing as the rampant Knights thundered
in with three 5-1's and two 4-2's in the space of the next five heats.
Shane Parker set the tone with a brilliant last to second effort in heat
3 to follow home partner Craig Boyce for the first of three maximums they
recorded in their three rides together.
26-10 after just six heats, the contest was over.
A question then of damage limitation for the Eagles from that point and
to many people's surprise they brought in both Dugard and Screen as
tacticxals in heat 8 but opted NOT to use the Golden double rule.
Travis McGowan negated the moves anyway with a breathtaking ride that saw
him repass Joe Screen for the victory.
Two 5-1's followed for the Knights to extend their lead to 42-18 and the
Eagles managed to share the points in the next four races to prevent KL
racking up at Exeter-type score.
Boyce completed a fine paid maximum in the last, Shane Parker having
completed a four ride one in the previous race.
Two heat winners (Dugard on each occasion) and NO heat advantages says it
all from Eastbourne's viewpoint.
Special mention must be made of track curator 'Huggy' for producing a
strip that provided plenty of passing opportunities and consistently fast
times.

Any chance that the Islanders had of pulling back the 10 point deficit
from the first leg effectively ended in the first six heats.
Newman's bike spluttered and coughed as soon as he got out of the gate in
the opener leading to an early retirement.
Shields got bumped at the first bend of heat 3 and couldn't make up the
lost ground.
And he suffered the wrath of referee Bates being excluded two heats later
after Mark Simmonds fell on the back straight. A difficult one to call.
Bird led, Shields weaved his way past Gordon into third and then drove up
the inside of Simmonds. Halfway down the straight the Exeter rider
tumbled. Did he 'move in' or did Shields 'move out'? Speaking
afterwards Simmo merely said, "Adam and I had a bit of a coming
together." Anyway Shields was the one excluded.
Heat 6 saw Newman drop a chain whilst third and Exeter extended their
lead to four with a 4-2 in heat 7.
Heats were running out for the Islanders and bike problems were
compounding. Phillips was excluded under the 2 minutes rule when his
bike lost all power as he approacxhed the start although to be fair,
Bobby Eldridge then dropped a chain whilst second when the heat did get
underway.
Bird, unbeaten at that stage, ground to a halt as he shed a chain in heat
9 effectively handing the Falcons a match and tie winning 5-1 with them
eight points clear on the night (18 on aggregate) with just six races to
go.
Bird, on his second bike, finished last in a shared heat 10 but the
Islkanders gained some consolation as the very much in'form Ray Morton
and Scott Swain recorded a heat 11 5-1.
Heat 12 produced a 3-2 - Phillips succumbing to a engine failure and
Stephens falling heavily on the last bend.
The latter was concusse after hitting the safety fence but seemed to have
recovered by the time he reached the bar afterwards.
His comment to me was, "I should have settled for second behind Adam
(Shields) instead of going for it."
Heat 13 was the race of the night and also the one in which Morton
suffered his only defeat of the night. He and Michael Coles diced for
the lead in brilliant fashion for the full four laps, the Exeter man
getting the verdict on the line by half a wheel or less.
Any chance the Islanders had of winning on the night effectively
disappeared when Bird was excluded under 2minutes in race 14 and with
Swain suffering a puncture in the last, victory went to the Falcons with
Morton avenging his earlier defeat by Coles.
Nine heat wiiners for the Islanders...a workmanlike, if unspectacular
performance though from the visitors.
