Hey Stein,

Currently we have no riders in Belgium, but we are trying to build a new
track, where we can start with education of young riders.
It is our goal to lift Belgium again up in the speedwaysport.
This year we organise on our only track the second semifinal of the European
Junior Speedway Championship (under 19) and next year we have to final of
the European Championship for the big guys.
Hopefully this meetings will encourage some young riders to start with
speedway.

Come and see us the 20 of august in the Helzoldstadium in Heusden-Zolder,
Belgium.

Cheers,

Nico Moors

Mainly for the benefit of Australian Based Listees.

It has been pointed out to me by fellow Listees that I may have missed a
scheduled speedway telecast on Fox Sports during August.

This has proven to be correct, so please accept my apologies.

The previously advertised time slots on Friday Nights, 4/8, 11/8 and 18/8
at 7:30pm still apply on the Main Sports Channel Fox Sports 1.

The extra one is on Monday Night at 7:00pm on Fox Sports 2.

Whether this is a new match or a repeat of an earlier match I am unsure of.

>From this evening's meeting, we will be running live updates from Armadale
on the Monarchs Web Pages.

This will take the form of an update every three or four heats. It will
start with confiration of teams and conclude with the final score. If the
usage justifies it and if the technology works OK, the updates may become
more frequent, maybe even a real time live commentary.

This is experimental this evening so apologies in advance if things don't
quite go as intended.

The updates will be similar to the match report heat comments but are
obviously more immediate and with less time for reflection. They will be
written by Helen Lowe. For technical reasons the live updates will be
posted from the bar at Armadale so the view of the second bend is restricted.

The match reports, written by myself, will appear as previously by Saturday
morning.

To access this please follow the link for 'Armadale Live' from the menubar
on the Monarchs' home page. Remember to press 'reload' on subsequent access
to the page to receive the updated score.

The European Championship Speedway, did untill this year only exist for
teams and juniors. But in 2001 the UEM starts with an European Senior
Speedway Championship, for riders older then 15. This competition will be
held in 1 qualification-round, 2 semifinals and 1 final. The final will take
place in Heusden-Zolder (Belgium), at the Helzoldstadium-track. As
organiser, we have the right of one Belgian rider in the final, but as we
currently have no riders, this is a problem.
Maybe there is a rider interested in riding under Belgian licence, so he
automatically is placed for the final. If so, he can contact me by mail.
Then we will see what we can do.

Per Wester R 0 0 0

Heat  1 - Dean Barker ; Martin Dugard ; Todd Wiltshire ; Jan Staechmann ;
59.8 (1-5)(1-5)

Easiest 5-1 you will see form the gate, won by miles by the Eagles

Heat 2 - Ales Dryml ; Mark Lemon ; Petri Kokko ; Per Wester(R) ; 60.0
(5-1)(6-6)

Kokko made the start and was passed by Dryml on the 2nd bend and Lemon a lap
later, Wester out of contention

Heat  3 - Jan Staechmann ; Steve Johnston ; David Norris ; Paul Hurry(Fx) ;
Aw (5-1)(11-7)

Flying gate from Staek with Hurry falling while 3rd with Norris tailed off

Heat 4 - Joe Screen ; Mark Lemon ; Jimmy Nilsen ; Per Wester ; 59.6
(3-3)(14-10)

Screen from the gate

Heat  5 - Martin Dugard ; Dean Barker ; Ales Dryml ; Steve Johnston(R) ;
59.7 (1-5)(15-15)

Thrilling 1st/2nd bend with Dryml attempting to go around both Eagles and
very nearly making it, Johno packed up while last

Heat 6 - Joe Screen ; Todd Wiltshire ; Jan Staechmann ; Per Wester ; 59.4
(3-3)(18-18)

Again the flying Screen winning in some style

Heat 7 - Jimmy Nilsen ; Paul Hurry ; David Norris ; Ales Dryml(F) ; 59.6
(3-3)(21-21)

Dryml again almost getting out of the start but bulked by Hurry from gate 3
making little attempt to turn. Nilsen chased hard by the Eagles all the way,
Dryml fell at the back

Heat 8 - Dean Barker ; Mark Lemon ; Petri Kokko ; Jan Staechmann ; 60.2
(2-4)(23-25)

Lemo fron the start was stalked and eventually superbly passed by Dean
Barker, Staek all over Kokko, just failing to get past

Heat 9 - Joe Screen ; Mark Lemon ; Steve Johnston ; Petri Kokko ; 60.1
(3-3)(26-28)

Fairly straight forward 3-3 from the start, Screeny now made 3 in a row

Heat 10 - Paul Hurry ; Todd Wiltshire ; Jan Staechmann ; David Norris ; 59.4
(3-3)(29-31)

First of the bizarre heats, the Eagles making the start with Hurry almost
fencing his partner clearly thinking it was a Cheetah. Norris was very
unhappy and dumped his bike at the pits gate and stormed into the pits.
Points chucked away by Eastbourne

Heat 11 - Jimmy Nilsen ; Martin Dugard ; Dean Barker ; Ales Dryml ;
(3-3)(32-34)

Easy win from Kimmy from the gate with Dugard getting stuck behind his
partner never really getting on terms

Heat 12 - Steve Johnston ; David Norris ; Mark Lemon ; Petri Kokko ; 60.3
(4-2)(36-36)

Always Oxford's big chance and Johno came good at the right time on his 2nd
bike with Norris making a fine pass on Lemo

Heat 13 - Joe Screen ; Todd Wiltshire ; Jimmy Nilsen ; Martin Dugard ; 59.9
(3-3)(39-39)

Wiltshire from the gate who was lined up and passed brilliantly by Joe on
lap 3. Dugard again struggling at the back

Heat 14 - Paul Hurry ; Ales Dryml ; Petri Kokko ; Mark Lemon ;
(2-4)(41-43)

The one that looked like costing Oxford dear. Dryml making the start and
being taken off bend 4 by Hurry on the outside with Lemo nable to make any
impression on Kokko

Heat 15 - Jimmy Nilsen ; Todd Wiltshire ; Joe Screen ; Martin Dugard(Fx) ;
Aw (5-1)(46-44)

Now for the real controversy. The first running pulled back when the
Cheetahs made the start with Nilsen and Dugard tangling going into the 1st
bend. Th erestart was a carbon copy with the Cheetahs getting the jump with
Dugard 3rd. Going in LAP 2 Dugard fell and to be fair to Joe he had to take
a different line to avoid him. Dugard stayed down and the referee not only
excluded him but awarded the race. I guess this is one of those which is a
tough one. Martin did not dump the bike to get a re-run as it was a genuine
fall, he didn't attempt to get up but its difficult to be critical of that.
Screen was a long way adrift but with 3 laps to go and him on a max I
wouldn't like to be certain he wouldn't have at least been on terms and may
even made a pass. Still it makes a change for one of these to go our way and
I reckon on the night we deserved the luck !

So Eastbourne lose a meeting they will have fully expected to win and I can
see the Speedway Star healines about the referee costing them the league
now. The fact is that the meeting was won and lost by the reserves. Oxford's
pair scoring paid 16 compared to 3 from Eastbourne.

For the Cheetahs, Todd starting very quietly but came good when he was
needed, Staek rode as well as he has this season and was making starts
(augers well for Belle Vue), Johno was struggling with bikes but still came
up with a vital win. R/R for flu vicxtim Lukas yielded 3 points and Jimmy
again was top quality. The reserves were the stars though, Lemo was really
in amongst it in every race and hopefully will go on from here. Ales Dryml
is beginning to look a very good rider and this for me was his best
performance for the club. He is competitive in every race now and mixing it
with allcomers

For Eastbourne, Dugard tailed off after looking unbeatable in his first 2,
Dean Barker dropped only one point and was superb. Norris was off clolour
other than a fine pass of Lemon and Hurry still frightens me, he is just on
the edge all the start, ask Norris. Scrreny put up one of hsi best Oxford
performances and was gating like a demon and the reserves were poor. Kokko
made upteen starts and was passed so easily, Wester is simply not up to EL
racing. Maybe time will change this but I felt a bit dorry for him, he was
mils behind and Eastbourne got rid of his 3 rides by Heat 6.

A win for Oxford that nobody expected and that keeps the title race wide open

Thanks for clarifying this.

I have to ask the UEM (and no disrespect to the Belgian organisers of the
Final), what exactly is the point of introducing such a competition? The
calendar is already sufficiently crowded with various World Championship
meetings, and I can't see understand why they feel the need to duplicate
existing competitions.

Which countries are planning to enter riders in this?

7. Per Wester R 0 0 - - - 0

Controversial end to this meeting. Oxford were trailing by two points going
into Heat 15. On the first start, there was a lot of first bend bunching
and the referee called a restart. In the re-run, both Wiltshire and Nilsen
gated and held the lead for two laps. Dugard then locked-up on the second
bend and stayed down on the track. Rather than order a re-run, the Referee
awarded a 5-1 to Oxford which won us the match.

A brave, but correct decision in my view. Nilsen and Wiltshire were well
clear of Dugard and Screen, and no-one was to blame for Dugard going down.
His fall looked rather innocuous and I thought he could have got off the track.
