Subject: Speedway Star/ GPTV / Eng-Aust tour??
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 04:28:31 +1000

I have just read in Speedway Star what England Under 21 boss
Graham Reeve said about Scot Ross Brady: "If we do get a tour over
to Australia in the winter I would be delighted to take one of the
(Scottish)
boys. We are talking about it at this moment and I am hopeful that it will
come off."
The Star also mentions a "reciprocal tour of Australia....if details of the
trip are finalised" What could this mean?
Also, it saddens me to read what we Australians missed out on while
watching the British GP. The only voices we heard were those of the dulcet
tones of Mr David Tapp - and Rod Colhoun - trying to commentate from
20,000kms away.
I read about the tremendous atmosphere generated in the pits ("The Thrill
Factory"), with both Suzi Perry and Channel 4's Kate Russell interviewing
throughout the meeting - both in leather pants, no less!
I think that the females are great for the sport.
I also think that, now we have finally got the GPs, we could expect more
than just seeing the on-track action. We didn't get to hear from Martin
Dugard, or Mark Loram - or anyone else for that matter.
For the first few GPs we at least heard Tony Millard and Peter Collins
- surely that is better than David Tapp yelling at us, looking at a TV
monitor?
Also, I noted that Tapp made quite a few mistakes, for which he reasoned:
"It has been a long day."

It's nearly 1.15p.m Thursday...Brian Griffin (King's Lynn co-promoter)
has phoned me having spoken at length to Peter. Good news is that he's
up and about, xrays confirm NO broken bones...he's a little bit sore
(naturally) and just waiting for doctor's to agree to discharge him. A
taxi will take him to his Swindon base...from there he hopes later
today, or tomorrow, to fly to Sweden.

Good news again following upon the earlier news that Nigel Sadler had
been released from hospital.

What sort of crowd did you get for this. It was very dissapointing at Oxford,
but it did clash with Oxford v Chelsea at soccer, and it was not a good night
for the weather.

15.61.5 Stead/Watson/Neath/Harrison 49-41

An entertaining meeting with the riders looking proud to represent their
country. Mark Steel in particular caught the eye, with some good rides
whilst Simon Stead and Oliver Allen also weighed in with respectable
performances which helped England take a 2-0 lead. Stead's third to first
burst in heat 10 showed that he has the talent perhaps to go a long way in
this game, he left Collyer and Lemon stunned with his move. Watson used his
track knowledge to good effect in heat 5 when he picked off the opponents,
but he had to give second best to Stead in heat 15.
Lemon, for all his experience was a shade disappointing, but Harrison got
better as meeting progressed.

Subject: Sudden Sam to ride?
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 19:01:43 +0100

Sam Ermolenko has had the plaster removed from his injured wrist, and is to
take part in the practice for the Inter Continental Final tomorrow (Friday)
to decide whether he is fit enough to take his place in the final on
Saturday.

Apparently, the doctor removed the plaster and moved his hand around quite
violently. The doctor said "Does that hurt?" and Sam said "No."
The doctor said "You are a liar!"

Good luck Sam, you deserve some.

Cheers,
Mark.

Subject: Ipswich 52 Belle Vue 38
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 23:43:58 +0100

Q: What is the difference between Jason Lyons & Rob Beckingham?

A: Beckingham has been to all BV matches this year.

Not sure if the above is true, but it was interesting to see that loyal
servant of BV putting his personal interests ahead of the club by dashing
off to the ICF on a massively long ferry trip, thus denying his fans and the
paying public his presence at Foxhall tonight, being replaced by
.................... Lee Smethills. Yes, the EL was blessed tonight as
Belle Vue tried out their proposed PL team line-up for 2001 :-)

Ipswich 52

Louis 3 3 3 2+ 3 14+1
Osborn 0 0 0 0
Svab 2 2+ 3 2 1 10+1
Ferjan 0 3 1 2 6
Boyce (G) 3 3 3 3 12
Doncaster 0 2+ 2 1+ 5+2
Hare 1 2+ 0 F 3+1

Belle Vue 38

Smith 1+ 0 0 1+1
Karger 2 1 3 2 1 2 11
Parker 1 1 1+ 3 0 6+1
Laukkanen 3 0 2 3 0 8
Smethills 0 1+ 0 1+1
Staechmann 2+ 2 1 1 6+1
Cunningham 3 1 1 0 5

Strange match, with some mildly entertaining racing, but nothing really
dramatic until Laukkanen's excellent effort in heat 14, which was good
speedway.

Good to see that David Osborn has improved, and rode very tidily in his
mandatory three rides. Lee Smethills also impressed, obviously being more
experienced than Osborn, but he rode the Foxhall track well. Both also rode
with a lot of determination and effort, which is more than can be said for
Andy Smith who was a complete and total disgrace to the sport, and
rightfully was removed from his last programmed ride. No doubt Mr
Beckingham will have an excuse, but the bloke doesn't earn any respect if
he's just going to go through the motions like he did tonight. Is he next
for the axe when the September Green Sheets come out? I'm sure there must
be another reject that Perrin can sign.

Ipswich announcer Kevin Long continued his battle with Shane Parker with
another entertaining introduction - this time saying that when Perrin was
looking for another replacement rider, he thought he'd better find someone
with experience of collecting the Wooden Spoon - and of course Parker is one
of the most experienced EL riders in that respect, thanks to his time in
Deadbeet land.

Louis and Boyce were way in front of the rest - although Louis had a mild
scare in Heat 15 (see later). Boyce did his bit for the team in Heat 4, but
he must have been pleased for a good pay night with such easy pickings.

Heat comments:
Heat 1: Predictable 3-3 as Louis wins with Osborn at least showing Smith how
to broadside correctly, with the multiple British Champion and GP star
preferring to two-wheel into the bends and open the throttle occasionally
down the straight. His years of experience really told as he held third
place ahead of the 17-year old CL rider.
Heat 2: Doncaster leads for but Cunningham forced his way past, followed by
Staechmann. Doncaster briefly got 2nd again, but Staechmann repassed, and
then Doncaster tailed off leaving Hare to toddle round for third. Belle Vue
ahead 4-8 !!!
Heat 3: Laukkanen off and gone, and Parker bides his time to eventually pass
a very erratic Ferjan for third place. Belle Vue 6 points ahead 6-12
!!!!!!!!
Heat 4: Hare gates and Boyce does some fine team riding to bring him home
ahead of Cunningham. Lol didn't look at all comfortable, and Boyce plugged
every single gap, so that Cunningham never really got a chance to challenge.
Heat 5: Unchallenged 5-1 by Svab and Ferjan over those great GP stars Karger
and Smith, Ipswich ahead 16-14.
Heat 6: Massive task for Louis against Staechmann, Smethills and Osborn - EL
at it's best :-(
Heat 7: Doncaster gates with Boyce, but this time Boyce isn't interested in
team riding - probably assuming that Doncaster is good enough to fend for
himself. 5-1 to Ipswich anyway.
Heat 8: Karger proves his GP class with a win over Doncaster (in for
Osborn). Slow Hare is passed by Cunningham with no problem.
Interval - empty centre green - no interviews or attempt to entertain.
Heat 9: Untroubled 5-1 for Svab & Ferjan over Staechmann & Smethills. 31-23
Heat 10: Louis, Parker, Laukkanen, Osborn
Heat 11: Boyce wins easily, Karger second and Doncaster passes Smith for
third. 38-28
Heat 12: Parker gets his mandatory one heat win at Foxhall. Staechmann has
no problem passing slow Hare, who later slides off on third bend. 2-4
40-32
Heat 13: Double T/S move by BV, replacing Smith and Smethills with Karger
and Parker, who then conceded a 5-1 to Louis & Boyce :-)
Heat 14: Doncaster and Ferjan gate, but super ride by Laukkanen who passes
one and then the other with real proper decent racing speedway passes. Good
round of applause from fans and well deserved. 48-36
Heat 15: With BV being such a motley assortment and riding in all sorts of
different leathers and race jackets with hastily taped on numbers, I really
didn't believe it was Karger who passed Louis down the back straight on the
first lap! After Laukkanen's efforts in 14, it had to be the Finn and
several of us wrote him down in 2nd place (Louis casually took back 1st
place on the first bend of lap two), but it was Karger who had suddenly
sprung to life with a most undeserved 2nd place, while Laukkanen was last
behind Svab.

The match was over quite quickly and I'm sure that Rob B, in his own sweet
way, will tell us all how Belle Vue could of (sic) won if Lyons had not put
himself before his club.

As it is, I'm sure that Rob will be delighted to hear that, with this
defeat, his beloved Aces have confirmed their place in the Craven Shield by
finishing in the top 9 in the EL. A good achievement for a team that has
been languishing at the bottom of the league all season - he must be proud.

Finally, I must steal another Pete Mumford joke. He was complaining how
Belle Vue are the same year in, year out. Of course, that's exactly what
John Perrin says to his riders "year in, year out" or "year out, year in"
(nice one Pete).

Cheers,
Dave Love
