Another Comeback plus quick result, & Rumours by Terry Stonehouse

Hi

Must have been a bad weekend for more than one of us!!

Its 11:40pm Sunday and I have just got my PC working again. Not enough
time to key a match result in from Friday.

  Results were :-

  Peterborough 50 Coventry 40

  Thundercats 52 Buxton 26

Jason Crump was superb with a 15 point maximum earned the hard way.
Excellent racing from messrs Crump, Andersen and Hancock. Tesar was very
  poor again.

  Full match report Monday PM.

Latest rumours from the fans , big pinch of salt needed :-

Tesar to retire, to be replaced by either Tod Wiltshire, Paul Thorpe or
Niklas Klinberg. I've no idea where they get their ideas from but it makes
  interesting gossip!!

 Cheers Terry

Premier League Cup by John Lowe

With the large number of call-offs due to waterlogged tracks, the Premier
League Cup is heading for major fixture problems. How the outstanding fixtures
are to be cleared by the appointed day escapes me.

In the Northern Section, Glasgow has been very badly hit with home and away
matches postponed and have five matches to complete. Newcastle is almost as
badly hit with four fixtures to go.

In the Southern Section, Skegness have yet to complete their second home
fixture. They will have to stage triple or quadruple headers at this rate.

Is their any provision to allow the cup fixtures to be spill over into June?
If so what will the implications for the Green Sheet averages which could be
  delayed still further (to August?).

Why were cup matches not used to compute CMAs. Since the cup qualifying round
is based on groupings corresponding to half the respective league, this could
have been used without undue bias to the figures.

This would have cleared up all the arguments about abuse of rider replacement
and guests on unrealistic averages. The promoters appear to have stumbled into
the current situation without thinking about the implications.

RE: Premier League Cup by Glenn Russell

John Lowe

  Thanks for your posting.

The points you have made are sensible.

Promoters for years have been guilty of not thinking things through properly
in every country in the world. It is magnified much more in Britain because
of the "At times" complex nature of the league structures.

I just wish one winter that no changes are made, and that the next season,
is steady as she goes, but then again I could be accused of believing
  in the tooth fairy.

Kyrketorp Trophy at Skovde by Jonas Holmqvist

Simon Wigg was in a class of his own in Sunday's longtrack event at Skovde. Wigg
easily won all of his five races, including the five-lap final for the Kyrketorp
Trophy. This was Wigg's second appearance at the famous Skovde circuit, his
first one being as long ago as 1980.
The 1997 event also included the Nordic Championship. Runner-up in the final was
Denmark's Jens Peter Nielsen, which meant that he retained the Nordic Longtrack
title he won last year. Third overall and silver medalist in the Nordic
Championship was Swede Niklas Karlsson. The bronze medal went to Norwegian Willy
  Tjessem.

Arne Bergstrom by Jonas Holmqvist

Arne Bergstrom, known as Father Wolf or Sweden's Mr. Speedway, died on Sunday at
the age of 83 years. Bergstrom was widely regarded as the man who has done most
for Swedish speedway. He was Vargarna manager and national team manager for many
years, including the golden era during the fifties and sixties when Sweden
dominated the world speedway scene. He was also the man behind the introduction
of league racing in Sweden. Prior to that he had convinced the Swedes to adopt
the British points scoring system. Meetings had earlier been decided by the
fastest time and many people were sceptical against the new system, which
finally turned out to be a great success. Bergstrom attended his last meeting
just a week before his death and was also able to witness his beloved Vargarna
team's return to the Elite League earlier the same week.

Re: Edinbugh v. Sheffield by Mick Ibbotson

Edinburgh duly recorded their biggest win of the season against
the poor travellers, Sheffield.

But not as poor as Edinburgh away...63-27

If both teams had been but 6 riders as at Sheffield, the score
may have been quite different...

BSPA Website (again) by David Rowe

I see that the BSPA site has undergone changes to distinguish KO Cup
  fixtures from Elite League matches.

But there are still some interesting errors, the best of which is a mysterious
Kings Lynn 41 Coventry 49 result.
Now hopefully this is telling us something, but to my knowledge that fixture
was cancelled in early April, and hasn't been rearranged!!

I saw Five-One at the weekend, and congratulations to John Stoneman - an excellent article.

Coventry v Kings Lynn by David Rowe

An absolute disaster for Coventry, but full credit to Kings Lynn - any other result
would have been an injustice.

  COVENTRY 42 KINGS LYNN 48
  B.Andersen 3 3 2 1'1' 10(2) S.Wigg 2 3 1 1 2 9
  S.Bowes M 2'1'2 E 5(2) S.Tacey 1'2'E 0 1' 4(3)
  G.Hancock 3 3 3 2 2 13 S.Parker 2 1 3 1 1 8
  A.Smith 1 0 2'2 3 8(1) B.Brhel 0 E 2'3 3 8(1)
  J.Jorgensen 2 1 0 0 2 5 T.Topinka 1 2 3 3 0 9
  P.Smith 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 C.Stonehewer 3 1'0 3 3 10(1)

Ref - Ronnie Allan - nothing really to do.

The meeting was held up for an hour to get the track fit for racing after
a heavy shower at 6.00. Coventry probably wish they'd simply called the
  meeting off.

  Ht 1:Andersen, Wigg, Tacey, P.Smith, Bowes(min), 65.6 3-3 3-3
How you can miss heat 1 having had an extra hour to prepare should take
  some explaining!

  Ht 2:Hancock, Parker, A.Smith, Brhel, 65.4 4-2 7-5
Smith and Parker battled for second, with Smith passing Parker at the end
of lap one and then Parker repeating the move next time around.

  Ht 3:Stonehewer, Jorgensen, Topinka, P.Smith, 65.5 2-4 9-9

  Ht 4:Andersen, Bowes, Parker, Brhel(ef), 65.7 5-1 14-10
Lucky for Cov. Brhel led all the way, from Andersen, with Bowes fending off
Parker. Brhel ef on last corner, and Bowes held on to second place.

  Ht 5:Hancock, Topinka, Stonehewer, A.Smith, 65.4 3-3 17-13
Smith gated but made an unusual move on the first bend and dropped from
  first to last.

  Ht 6:Wigg, Tacey, Jorgensen, P.Smith, 65.9 1-5 18-18
From the gate, and Coventry's weak pairing now apparent. Jorgensen never
did like wet tracks - but everyone else apart from Paul Smith managed.

  Ht 7:Topinka, Andersen, Bowes, Stonehewer, 65.4 3-3 21-21
Good race, and good win for Topinka.

  Ht 8:Hancock, A.Smith, Wigg, Tacey(ef), 65.4 5-1 26-22
Tacey twice nearly crashed into the back of Smith before appearing to lose
his chain and rearing violently amidst a shower of sparks. This delayed
Wigg and resulted in a Bees 5-1 by about half a lap.

  Ht 9:Parker, Brhel, P.Smith, Jorgensen, 65.5 1-5 27-27
Embarrassing for Jorgensen as, having been squeezed out at the first bend,
he made no impression on Smith.

  Ht10:Topinka, A.Smith, Andersen, Tacey, 65.4 3-3 30-30

  Ht11:Brhel, Hancock, Wigg, P.Smith, 63.9 2-4 32-34
Brilliant ride from Brhel, by far the quickest of the night and proving
that there wasn't much wrong with the track.

  Ht12:Stonehewer, Bowes, Parker, Jorgensen, 64.5 2-4 34-38

  Ht13:A.Smith, Wigg, Tacey, P.Smith, 65.7 3-3 37-41
Everyone cheering for Andy Smith!!! after he rode a good first lap
to keep Wigg back. Paul Smith predictably last by some distance.

  Ht14:Brhel, Jorgensen, Parker, Bowes(ef), 64.9 2-4 39-45
Had Bowes kept going, it would have gone to the last race, but yet another
bike failure. Jorgensen just managed to scoot (not slide) round to beat
  Parker.

  Ht15:Stonehewer, Hancock, Andersen, Topinka, 64.6 3-3 42-48

Golden Helmet (CANNOT call it Gauntlet!): Hancock, Brhel, 64.5
Brhel made the best gate, but Hancock slipped inside him coming out of
  the second bend.

So Coventry lost it really from Jorgensen and Paul Smith's uncompetitive
displays. Andy Smith certainly couldn't be faulted for his efforts.
Brhel and Stonehewer (guesting for injured Hurry) were the Kings Lynn
match-winners, with Brhel probably riding better than I've ever seen him.

Coventry have two weeks off now, so we may see more changes before then.

  Cheers,David Rowe, University of Warwick
GP Predictions by Rafal Baranowski

Here is my 8:
Tomasz Gollob, Hans Nielsen, Billy Hamill, Tony Rickardsson,
Greg Hancock, Slawomir Drabik, Piotr Protasiewicz, Cris Louis

As you see there was no place for:
Henka Gustafsson (poor in his last matches in Poland - 3pts at home
with Leszno, and 4 pts in Torun yesterday - I saw him)
Jimmy Nilsen - good this year, but I don't like him, because of his
poor starts for GKM Grudziadz few years ago.

All Poles have good fast and reliable bikes and I hope they will
survive in Top 8, and Tomasz Gollob with one from first three places
  and medal.

Re: Edinbugh v. Sheffield by Roger Pilkington

If both teams had been but 6 riders as at Sheffield, the score may
  have been quite different...

I take it you mean that if the monarchs had had Peter Carr rather
than the (not so) heat leader Kosonen plus if Blair Scott had been
fit rather than using under performing subs, that the Monarchs would
have pushed for a draw away and thrashed Sheffield even more at home!
