As far as I know, the cut-off point is still 6.00 (EL). However, it could
be that discussions may take place between the BSPA and the Department of
Employment regarding this - where presumably it would be argued by the BSPA
that the standard of the EL this year was sufficiently high to merit the
cut-off being lowered. I've heard on the grapevine a figure of 5.00 might
be being put forward - we'll have to see.

Whatever happens, I've no doubt the EL promoters will try to use their
inbuilt advantage in voting at the BSPA to try and compel PL teams to part
with some of their best riders in a similar manner to the 7.00 ceiling
attached to the PL this season. Whether PL promoters and/or the riders will
go along with this remains to be seen.

Here here.
But, as has been discussed at length before on the list, this years formula
for the composition of the heats hasn't helped speedway at all. It was
surely designed for an EL with six "superstars" in each team, and a far
better formula could and should have been dreamt up to meet the different
needs of the PL.

True, but a better heat formula would also aid the younger riders to come
through.

I agree the adjustments made were for the "benefit" of the few rather than
for the many. What's really needed is for an independent SCB to take the
bull by the horns and make the rules for the benefit of the sport rather
than for just the few with the biggest cheque books and the loudest mouths.

Quite so. Even Mr Ham now seems to be belatedly realising (just as with
laydowns), to his immense cost, that running the sport for the benefit of
just a few riders is NOT the way forward. A proper objective viewpoint
needs to be taken if there is to be any long term way forward.

Date: 21 Sep 97 10:37:28 GMT

Date: Friday 19 September
Venue: Oxford

BPL

Oxford 41 Isle of Wight 49

Oxford

P Berge 3 1 0 1 3 8
(An off night, seemed to lack speed)
M Teurnberg 1 3 3 2* 0 3 12+1
(The star for Oxford, rode with determination and attacked the track, others
could have learned from him)
L Hare 3 3 M X 6
(Looked good again until Loram's bike packed up, then took a suicidal dive
inside Woodifield and that finished him)
A Barlow 0 0 1 0 0 1 2
(Was in scoring positions in every race but unable to hold it, Dyer's hero Lee
Richardson mischeviously suggested it was all to do with not twisting the right
hand)
N Tatum 2 1 3 3 2* 11+1
(Clearly didn't fancy the wet track early on, Bunyan beat him by 40 yards and
in his second race Hedge was with him at the end, got better as it dried)
J Luckhurst RR
(RR yielded 4+1)
G Hedge (TR) 1* 0 0 1 0 2+1
(Again, there or there abouts at the start but no speed)

Isle of Wight

B Woodifield 2 3 3 3 2* 1 11+1
(Top scored without being noticeably good)
W Carter E 2* 2* 2* 0 6+3
(Thank god his engine packed up in one else it would have been worse. A fine
performance by a guy who always rides Cowley well)
N Sadler 2 0 X 1* 1* 4+2
(Derserved nothing, his disgraceful behaviour in Heat 9 was inexcusable)
M Simmonds 1* 2 1 3 2* 9+2
(Good solid performance)
S Tacey F 1* 2 3 3 9+1
(Got better and better, commanding by the end)
J Bunyan 3 2 1* 2 2 10+1
(This bloke is a git, how can you trail round for 5 lasts in his last Oxford
performance and then do this, the match winner)

Heat

1. Berge, Woodifield, Teurnberg, Carter EF 4-2

 Comfortable win for Berge

2. Hare, Sadler, Simmonds, Barlow 7-5

Barlow made the gate but couldn't hold it, Hare wins fairly easily

3. Bunyan, Tatum, Hedge, Tacey (Fell) 10-8

Tatum gated and was passed by Bunyan who pulled out 40 yards on a slow Tatum

4. Teurnberg, Simmonds, Berge, Sadler 14-10

5. Hare, Bunyan, Tacey, Barlow 17-13

Again Barlow in at the first corner, Hare wins easily

6. Woodifield, Carter, Tatum, Hedge 18-18

Crap ride by Tatum, beaten by the length of the straight

7. Teurnberg, Tacey, Bunyan, Berge 21-21

Won at the 3rd attempt by Teurnberg from the outside gate, no idea why the
first was stopped, Teurnberg made the start in the 2nd running and Bunyan was
dumped on the 1st corner by Berge (much to the delight of the crowd). Again
Teurnberg started in the 3rd running and again Bunyan was shoved out by Berge
but was able to catch and pass the Frenchman.

8. Woodifield, Carter, Barlow, Hedge,Hare Ex 2 mins 22-26

Hare's bike wouldn't start and this was a certain 5-1

9. Tatum, Teurnberg, Simmonds, Sadler, Exc 27-27

Sadler should be heavily fined for this, he was knocked off by his partner on
the 3rd bend and somply sat on the track alongside his bike until the lights
went on with the Cheetahs on a 5-1. Referee Chris Gay announced he intended
to speak to the rider. Not good enough, if he's doing this at 19 he'll get
worse. Didn't work anyway as the Oxford pair still got the 5-1

10. Tacey,Carter, Berge, Barlow 28-32

 Well strung out race

11. Simmonds, Woodifield, Hedge, Hare Exc 29-37

Woodifield gated until Hare passed Simmonds and tried a crazy pass on
Woodifeld and T boned him. Woodifield OK but Hare unable to take any further
part in the meeting

12. Tatum, Bunyan, Sadler, Teurnberg 32-40

For some reason Teurnberg decided to ride round the inside in this race after
being successful on the outside and was passed by Sadler

13. Berge, Bunyan, Sadler, Barlow 35-43

Bunyan led until suffering an EF coming off the last bend and being passed by
Berge

14. Tacey, Simmonds, Barlow, Hedge 36-48

 Forgone conclusion

15. Teurnberg, Tatum, Woodifield, Carter 41-49

A determined outside ride by Teurnberg, followed home by Tatum

Altogether a very dissappointing Oxford performance who rode like a team who
knew they couldn't make the play offs. A heavy shower an hour before the
meeting made the track very slippery early on and clearly some riders didn't
fancy it. Interestingly Mikael Teurnberg won Heat 15 in the fastest time of the
evening and 15 year old Lee Driver won Heat 2 of the junior challenge in a time
which would have won 3 races in the PL match.

Overall for Oxford only Teurnberg and earlier on Hare performed to the
fullwhereas IOW were solid throughout. Sode law though that Carter & Simmonds
(who Oxford tried to sign) scored paid 20 and Bunyan added paid 11 to that.
This was more like the Jason Bunyan we saw early season, he rode smoothly not
scraping the fence every lap, not looking like killing someone every race and
again looks a good prospect. Good for British Speedway (given earlier postings)
but totally pissed off the Oxford fans.

An unexciting meeting with the smallest crowd of the season on a cold miserable
night which bored the pants of me (hence a Sunday report).

Roll on next season

Hi All,

Greg Hancock is the World Champion.
On behalf of Greg and his fiancee I have written and am hosting a new
WWW site to celebrate his success. They will take over the site in the
near (!) future when we have helped them buy a decent machine, etc.
It incorporates his fan club details, a couple of decent photos and has
official merchandise for sale. I am sure that he would be grateful for
any comments concerning his achievements and I will be happy to pass
them on to him.
I have put links to his new site on my Wolves pages (Is that wise?) and
have listed the address below.

Greg Hancock's site: http://www.marklawt.demon.co.uk/greg/

Wasn't it good to see an English winner of a Grand Prix?

The only other question I really must ask is who the bloody hell are the
Owen Brothers???!

Best wishes

Mark

Dear list people - you are perfectly welcome to take this as a tirade of
sour
grapes, but I hope you dont!!!!!!!

Reading scrambled the bonus 90-88 on a track that according to team
manager,
Tim Sugar, "was an absolute and utter disgrace".

"There was insufficient lighting on the bends there was dust there
were holes and there was glass. The track was also bare in places
 - it was a nightmare"

"The track was downright dangerous and we would not want to go
back for the playoffs"

People have complained about the Reading track on occasion this year
but there is no comparison with this!
I trust Reading will lodge some sort of official complaint.
Not a good way to end the League programme.
Steen fell in the last race and has given his knee a painful knock.
He could be out for 2 or 3 weeks but it is hoped the bruising
may go quickly.

IoW 59

B. Woodifield 13-5
W Carter 7+3-5
N Sadler 11+1-5
J Bunyan 9+2-5
S Tacey 11+1-5
M Simmonds 8+4-5

Reading 29

D Mullett r/r (suicide not having a guest for no1 - nearly cost
us the bonus)
K. Marsh 0-1(couldn't hang on had the flu and withdrew)
D Steen 10-7
L. Richardson 2-5 (disappointingly not interested at all)
G. Cunningham 15-6 (won the bonus almost single handedly)
P. Pickering 0-4 (less interested than Lee)
S. Targett 2-2 (two solo rides in heats 13 and 14)

I understand the referee was presebted with some of the glass from the
track - so lets hope some action is taken.

Edinburgh - you are very very lucky you don't have to ride this!

Cheers
Nick
PS Lee Richardson guests for Kings Lynn with M Coles at Eastbourne
Glenn is on stand by for Tony at Swindon v Wolves.
Paul guests for Stoke v Oxford
Krister has had to pull out of guest appearences for Oxford at
stoke and Glasgow coz of his flu.

Dave Mullett was tidying up his hay bales when his hand got caught in
a binding and he fell about 12 feet!
Mr Mullett is a sheep farmer for those that don't know why he was on
a hay bale in the first place....

Reading's pair for Oxford next week now looks like being Mullett and
Richardson.

I think you will find that Edinburgh are there this coming Thursday.
They swapped with Newcastle who now go there on Monday.

As far as the play offs go I don't see any way that IOW won't
qualify. Probably in 7th or 8th place.

Which means Reading or Edinburgh will have to back there.

Happy sailing!
Robin.

For those that are intested Reading's Final 1997 Averages
are:

Dave Mullett 10.68
Glenn Cunningham 10.06
Dave Steen 8.16
Lee Richardson 7.31
Paul Pickering 6.27
Krister Marsh 2.33

Well done to the boys that was a magnificent season!
Ta to all those people who have congratulated Reading.

Incidentally Chistopher (I know you'll say I'm biting - but
here we go anyway) Per Jonsson is was and always will
be- my Hero. I hope Lee gets to be half as good as he was.

Has Chris had a personality transplant?
Teurnberg was great?
Hare let you down AGAIN me old son.
When will you dare to criticise him?

Back to the playoffs....
If all the teams coplete their matches I reckon IoW will
finish 5th or 6th.
Robin - I wouldn't scoff too much my son, coz if you
lose at home to IoW your own play off hopes will take
a severe knock.(I reckon Edinburgh for you lot...)

Reading - I am certain - would like Arena, who could well
finish 8th but it is very tight down the table where a lot could
depend on matches not ridden.

Ibbo - I think Hans Nielsen should be fined for being Hans
Nielsen.
Using the same criteria Jimmy Nilsen should be banned for
being so boring.

On the subject of "quality" I note a lot of Ipswich opinion
changing having got Rickardsson. I'd love to see TR riding
and thats probably the only thing I'd miss about the Elite.

I cannot understand why people can't admit it is failed...
It was set up as the "bigger" league (why Ipswich went
in in the first place) and has failed to get the publicity the
likes of Eastbourne said it would.
It is as Russell says a TV product but without TV surely
it cannot sustain itself?

I hear the TV deal on the table (NOT from Reading management
sources either) is 1000UKP a live match to be televised
on a Friday night....
Domestic Speedway will struggle to present itself in such
a slick light as the GP. The riders do not have a fleet of
mechanics 3 or 4 bikes etc....
Higlights yes, but live will be difficult.
Will Coventry be there?
Will Peterborough?
Will Swindon?
Will Ipswich?
Will Bradford?
Will K. Lynn?
Eastbourne v Poole v Belle Vue v Wolves anybody?

Cripes I'm sounding like Webbo......

Hi all,
Personally, I hope Larsen doesn't have to leave the Elite League.
He's riding superbly for Bradford at the moment.
