2009 Jack Milne Cup
August 15, 2009 - Costa Mesa
By: Ryan Evans

Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell added another trophy to his ample collection by winning the prestigious Jack Milne Cup at the world famous Costa Mesa Speedway.

McConnell started in gate one and made it pay off by getting the best start and leading the five-rider field into the first turn. He was chased by Jimmy Fishback down the back straight but he firmly held the lead through the first lap. Fishback tried to force a mistake out of the leader throughout the balance of the race, but Hedden opened the heats by beating Brad Pappalardo for his first win. Fishback defeated Buck Blair to win the second heat. McConnell passed Castro on the inside to win the third heat. Tim Gomez ended round one with a win over Shaun Harmatiuk.

Jason Ramirez started round two by beating Gino Manzares. Hedden made it two in a row by beating Brad Sauer. McConnell won his second straight race ahead of Fishback. Castro finished the second round with by defeating Burmeister.

The final round began with a scary incident. Brad Sauer was leading when Doug Greyson went down in turn three on the third lap. Greyson was unable to remove himself from harm’s way but the red flag never came out. Sauer entered turn three the final time only to find Greyson directly in his path. Sauer’s evasive action was too late and he hit Greyson and went down in a heap. After several minutes Sauer was able to get up and his pain was tempered by discovering that he was awarded the victory.

Gomez beat Burmeister in the next heat for his second win. McConnell beat Hedden to remain the only perfect rider on the evening. Fishback ended the heats with his second win.

Fishback and Hedden ran one-two in the first semi to transfer to the main event. Castro got away with a flying start in the second semi and led McConnell all the way as both riders transferred to the main event. Burmeister won the Last Chance to take the final spot in the main.

Philip Harmatiuk was dominant en route to victory in the Support Main Event. Dylan Black was second, Josh Abbott finished third, Kyle Hicks was fourth, and Rick Farron finished fifth.

Tim McGrath led all four laps to collect the win in the Support B Main Event. Mike Wiley was second, Charlie Ousley finished third, and Jonni Jade was fourth.

Hayley Perrault put together four smooth laps to win the Youth Third Division Main Event. Elijah Harrison-Hicks was second, Jacob Wondolowski finished third, Brian Pintar was fourth, and Michael Wells finished fifth.

River McDougall led from start to finish and won the Youth Second Division Main Event. Nicky Reimer finished second, Maxwell Ruml was third, Samuel Ramirez finished fourth, and Dillon Ruml was fifth.

Rocco Scopellite defeated Kyle Hicks to win the Youth First Division Main Event.

National Champions Joe Jones and Jimmy Olsen charged to victory in the Sidecar Main Event. Sean Driggers and Missy Driggers finished second, Brian Motis and Matt Davis were third, and Danny Jones and Chris Jones finished fourth.

The next event at Costa Mesa Speedway is Orange County Harley Davidson Night which will feature the ever-popular street-legal Harley races.
