It was a thrilling night of racing at Auburn's Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway Friday night at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. Billy Janniro, in the final race of the night pulled off a stunning move on Auburn's Tommy Hedden at the finish line of the scratch main event. In a move that had the Fast Fridays fans on their feet cheering, Janniro came from behind on the inside and with a burst of power coming out of turn four caught Hedden by a wheel at the finish line.
Both Hedden and Janniro put on a great show of skillful racing in the nights finale. The race started on a very fast blue grooved race track worn clean of loose dirt from a full night of racing. Janniro started outside in lane four, Hedden was next to him in lane three, Josh Larsen was in lane two and Bryan Yarrow drew the inside lane one. Right out of the gate Yarrow got a little too much power and was in a wheelie that almost got the best of him. Hedden got inside first with Janniro just outside of him hanging back. Hedden controlled the race and had a bike length on Janniro but on the last turn Janniro saw a small space on the inside and slipped past Hedden to finish just ahead of him by a half wheel as the crowd went wild. "That was good racing," said Janniro after the race with big smile on his face. "I kind of set Tommy up on the lap before and I made a better corner, I was glad to come out on top on that one," he said. Hedden finished second and the two men exchanged fist pumps on the cool down lap. Larsen was third and Yarrow fourth.
In the handicap main event it was visiting Southern California rider Josh Larsen that came out on top. Larsen last raced at Fast Fridays on May 17 winning the scratch main event and finishing second in the handicap main event. In Larsen's return to Fast Fridays he picked up another handicap main event victory. Larsen finished ahead of Auburn's Bob Hicks who finished second and Bart Bast who was third.
Bart Bast still leads the Division I season points race with 638 after last week's racing. Hedden follows closely with 561 and Janniro who missed one week has 529.
In Division II action Kevin Chapman picked up his second main event win of the season. Chapman also has two second place Division II main event finishes so far this season. Paul Sanburn was second and Colton Duncan finished third. Michael Achilles still leads the Division II season points race with 252 points with Chapman just behind him with 232.
Division III action was dominated by Auburn's sixteen-year-old Mersaroli twins. The duo packed a one-two punch in Division III as Louie Mersaroli won the main event this week. David Mersaroli won the main event last week and finished second to his brother Friday night. Kyle Porteous was third. Louie Mersaroli leads in Division III season points race with 256. Colton Hicks won the Youth 250cc main event, Kyle Cunningham won the Youth 150cc main event and Kevin Smith won the Run What U Brung main event.
The Extreme Sidecars made their second of six stops at Fast Fridays Friday night. Five teams of sidecar riders thrilled the crowd with their brand of fast paced racing. The sidecar main event was marred by a crash that left two of the bikes broken and unable to continue. The crowd gave them a loud applause for their efforts and the teams will be back at Fast Fridays on July 5 for more sidecar action.
