Orange County Fair Derby
July 14, 2018 - Costa Mesa
By Ryan Evans

46th Orange County Fair Derby - Costa Mesa, CA, USA - July 14

Billy “The Kid” Janniro won all five of his races and captured the Orange County Fair Derby for the second time in his illustrious career.

Every racer in the lineup for the Fair Derby Main Event was a past Fair Derby Champion. Janniro, Jimmy “Little Animal” Fishback, and Charlie “The Edge” Venegas were each seeking their second title while defending Fair Derby Champion Aaron Fox was trying to win his third.

Janniro exploded from his gate one starting position and led the field into turn one. Fox led the charge behind the leader as they raced down the back straight. Fox hovered behind Janniro in hopes that he would make a mistake. His hopes would never come to fruition as Janniro capped his flawless performance by crossing the finish line first. Fox settled for second, Venegas was third, and Fishback finished fourth.

The annual Fair Derby coincided with the 128th Orange County Fair which is held at the fairgrounds on which Costa Mesa Speedway sits. The speedway event is free with the fair admission and it brings many new fans as well as some former fans as well. It brings great exposure to the sport. The prestigious Bronze Hat is a perpetual trophy and presented to the main event every year. The event is a major event on the California speedway calendar.

Fishback opened the heats with a win over former Junior 250 National Champion Jason Ramirez. Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell beat “Fast” Eddie Castro in the second heat. Janniro used the outside to secure the lead from former National Champion Chris Manchester for his first win. Fox ended the first round with a victory ahead of Venegas.

Venegas started the second round with a victory over Dillon Ruml. Sammy Ramirez roared to an impressive win ahead of Fishback in the next heat. Janniro scored his second victory in a row ahead of McConnell. Fox finished round two with a win over Castro.

Ruml began the final round of heats with a win over Jason Ramirez. Venegas beat Castro for his second victory. Janniro remained perfect by defeating Manchester in event 17. Sammy Ramirez showed that his earlier victory was no fluke by sweeping around the outside for the lead and his second straight win in the final heat.

Fox cruised to victory in the first semi while Venegas finished second to join him in the main. Janniro scored his fourth straight win while Fishback followed him into the main event.

Ruml made the best start in the Scratch Consolation and defeated McConnell, Castro, and Sammy Ramirez.

Rudy Laurer put together four perfect laps and was victorious in the Support Main Event. David Lynch finished second, Hayley Perrault was third, and Charles Pearson finished fourth.

Dillon Osborne and Ashley Gibbons took home the victory in the Sidecar Exhibition Main Event. Jeff Rowe and Josh Bennett finished second, Ace Kale and Kevin Kale were third, and Bryan Motis and Tom Summers finished fourth.
