2018 Big Kids Gumball Rally
March 10, 2018 - Industry Racing
By Ryan Evans

Eight time United States National Champion Billy “The Kid” Janniro raced through the program undefeated and won the Big Kids Gumball Rally at Industry Racing.

Janniro made surprising choice of gate three for the main event. Max Ruml, also undefeated in the heats, chose gate one. Auspicious professional debutant Colton Hicks selected gate two which left gate four to Tyson Burmeister.

Max Ruml and Janniro left the line together but Janniro found more traction on the outside of turns one and two and pushed ahead on the back straight. Max Ruml, who was days away from jetting across the Atlantic to join the Edinburgh Monarchs of the British Championship League, tried to slip under the leader as they entered turn three. Janniro was equal to that challenge and led through lap one. It was the only threat that Max Ruml could muster and Janniro cruised the rest of the way for the victory. Max Ruml held on to second, Burmeister finished third, and Hicks was fourth.

Dillon Ruml kicked off the evening with a victory over Russell Green. Burmeister was victorious over Ryan Bast in the second heat. Max Ruml beat newly un-retired Jimmy Fishback in heat three. Tommy Hedden beat Chance Grove in event four. Janniro ended round one by beating Kurtis Hamill.

Burmeister started round two with his second straight win. Hamill scored a victory over Fishback in the next heat. Janniro defeated Dillon Ruml for his second victory in a row. Hicks beat Grove for his first win. Max Ruml defeated Gomez to finish the second round with his second win.

Dillon Ruml began the third round by defeating Jeremy Estes. Max Ruml trapped from gate four and held off Aaron Fox for his third straight win. Janniro matched Max Ruml’s score line and simultaneously finished Burmeister's undefeated run in event 23. Green beat Gomez in the next heat. Hicks held off Hedden and Hamill to complete round three with his second victory.

Bast slid past Colorado’s Redmond Bohannon to open the final round with a win. Fox won event 34 to get himself into the Last Chance Race. Hicks made it three straight victories by holding off Gomez in the next event. Max Ruml kept his brother at bay to remain undefeated. Janniro closed out the heats with his fourth victory while Green’s second put him into the Last Chance Race.

The initial attempt to run the First Division Last Chance ended with a red flag and Fox excluded from the restart. Burmeister made the best start the second time the tapes went up and held off Dillon Ruml and Green to transfer to the main event.

Michael Wells led from start to finish and scored an impressive victory in the Second Division Main Event. Davey Shaw finished second, Mike Miller was third, and Rohn Zellner finished fourth.

Sammy Tetrault came from behind to win both his heats and maintained that modus operandi in the Third Division Main Event. He stalked Brent Smith for a lap then went around the outside and raced away with the victory. Smith held on to second, Dennis Osmer was third, and Steve Brown finished fourth.

Defending National Sidecar Champions Joe Jones and Tom Summers started where they left off last season by winning the Sidecar Main Event. Bryan Motis and Johnny Bach finished second, Jeff Rowe and Josh Bennett were third, and Stuart Glass and Jack Straw finished fourth.
The Big Kids Gumball Rally is held on the eve of the Gumball Rally and the professionals forego a purse so that the money can be donated to the youth racers the following day.

The first regular season race of Industry Racing’s 2018 season will be the Connor Penhall Memorial Cup on Wednesday, May 30.
