July 20, 1996 - Hull Takes Speedway Double By The Seat Of His Pants Victorville Speedway

by Mike Maher

15 year old phenom Michael Hull scored a speedway double at Speedway USA when he managed to win both motorcycle main events, joining John Aden and Eddie Castro as the only riders able to accomplish the feat this season.

The handicap main was a strange one as Mike Mosby took the early lead while a tightly packed bunch consisting of Rick Selp, Kon Baur, Mike Boyle, Hull and Aaron Nichols fought it out behind him. As the group entered the third turn on the third lap there was contact and Selp, Hull, Boyle and Nichols all went flying, with Nichols slamming the wall hard, and Hull ripping the seat out of his leathers.

The race was restarted without Nichols, with Hull at the back of the pack, but Michael blasted his way through and took the lead and the win with Baur second, Mosby third, Selp fourth, and Boyle fifth.

In the scratch main event, Hull needed less time to take the lead as he passed early leader Baur by the end of the first lap and simply walked away to victory over Baur and Selp. Nichols had qualified for the event, but was unable to make it after his handicap main crash.

In sidecar action the handicap main was a rough one. It began when Duane Carmont and Chris Jones made contact with Steve Stanton and Jack Straw with Jones being knocked off. Both were able to make the restart and the team of Roger Loeffers and Arnold Fimbres took the early lead over the rest of the charging pack. Midway through the race Stanton and Straw collided with Alan Hall and Dirk Votaw, and both spun into the infield. Then the team of Dirk Gardner and Jeff Medberry took the lead, with Peter Lewis and James Macy taking over second place and holding it to the end, with Loeffers and Fimbres third, and Carmont and Jones spinning out.

In the sidecar scratch main, Lewis and macy took the early lead but Clyde Dennen and Dale Leeder came charging through and took the lead and the win with Gardner and Medberry taking a photo finish for second over Lewis and Macy, with Stanton and Straw a close third.

The night also featured the first ever motorcycle demolition derby with a field of contestants attempting to knock each other off their mounts with plastic baseball bats. In the end it was "MotoWorld 2" madman Jerry Bernardo besting Speedway USA promoter Gene Woods for the trophy. Bernardo celebrated by running around the track, throwing his goggles, gloves, and jersey to the cheering crowd. The smell of ham filled the stadium.
