ROBIN "NITRO" NICOLAIDES WINS!

Robin "Nitro" Nicolaides

The Northwest Speedway Championship at Pat's Acres Speedway Friday night September 17, 1999.

The weather was great - cooling down from a near 85 daytime temperature to a perfect evening of about 75 and clear - for the first ever Northwest Speedway Championship at Pat's Acres Speedway. In front of a near capacity crowd was some of the best and most exciting racing all season.

The half time show was a "hoot"! Five Ladies - wives, girlfriends & friends - for the first time ever in an Outlaw Kart raced for the 6 lap "Trophy Dash". As it went; fifteen laps and about as many minutes later Heather, driving Rick Fraiser's car won, however not without a valiant challenge from Suzie Morris and company. The Outlaw Kart program is always an "exciting and definitely worth the experience" addition to the Friday night Speedway show. Outlaw Kart Main Event winners were: 1st - #20 Rick Fraiser, 2nd - 30x Keary Morris & 3rd - #31x Mike Morris

NORTHWEST SPEEDWAY CHAMPIONSHIP

After ten of the best and most exciting races all year the points were totaled and the top three scorers of the evening, Robin "Nitro" Nicolaides, Mike Marr Jr., and "Racer Rick" Ellis, transferred to the NW Final event leaving the next 9 to battle it out in the Simi Final and Last Chance Qualifier. "Smokin Joe" Hovanic, winning the Last Chance Qualifier after a very near mishap when Paul Richards went down right in front of "Smokin" on the final lap coming out of turn 4, somehow keeping it together without incident Joe got the win and transferred to the final. The field was set with truly the fastest riders all year. The Start: the gate went up, into and through turn one three abreast Nitro, Mike Jr. & Smokin all trying to occupy the same race line, getting squeezed too tightly into turn two - the three of them getting tangled up was unavoidable. After a few minutes of gathering themselves and machine, to the restart. The Restart: Just as tightly as before going into and through turn one and two, but this time without incident Nito came through it in the lead. The battle between the years four fastest racers for first and second was clearly the most spectacular race all night - until lap three when hard charging Mike Jr. went down coming out of turn one leaving the remaining three to fight it out through the final lap.

The finish:
1st - #1 Robin "NITRO" Nicolaides
2nd - #77 "Smokin Joe" Hovanic
3rd - #17 "Racer Rick" Ellis.
