Very sad to report the death of Lawrence (Larry) Shaw and his wife Karalee Shaw. Well known and loved in the race community #5 Larry Shaw was a powerhouse in the sport.

Called "Lightning" in 1968 Larry raced TT and Flat Track with his lifetime friend Bill Cody. Both moved to Speedway the following year.

Larry Shaw was in the Top 5 for most of his racing career. No easy task with the quality of racer talent America had back then. Although the National Championship title alluded him in 1972 and 73 he finished 3rd and in 1976 he scored 2nd behind his brother in law Mike Bast. Shaw was also a member of the San Bernardino Sizzler Speedway team. On December 27, 2021 Larry Shaw was inducted into the Hot Shoe Hall of Fame.

Shaw’s first marriage was to Mike and Steve Bast sister Pam. They had two children, a son Davey and daughter Tamara. Following in his father’s footsteps Davey Shaw also became a top D1 racer.

There may be no rider who was closer to Larry Shaw than Shawn McConnell. “Larry would take me to Trojan Speedway every Tuesday so I could race minibikes” McConnell told me. “Then when I switched to Junior Speedway he sponsored me. My 1st 500cc bike was his old JAP. He was my Hero, I truly loved the man and am distraught about his passing.”

In a tribute to his mentor Larry Shaw every set of leathers and riding suits Shawn McConnell has worn since he started racing Speedway has had a lightning bolt on it.

So there’s more to the story but now is not the time or place.

God bless, we will miss you Larry Shaw.
