GREEN STARS TO WIN DUEL IN THE DESERT AT RIDGECREST

After a three-year absence, a small group of speedway riders joined with Flat Track and other motorcycle disciplines as motorcycle racing returned to the Desert Empire Fairgrounds in Ridgecrest, Ca on April 30th.

A near capacity crowd were wowed in an exciting show on a small bullring sized oval. The professional speedway division was dominated by Russell Green, who took two heats and the Main Event. Green did miss heat 3 after a two-minute time allowance failure, the subsequent two rider race turned into a thriller as Rees Todd, the initial leader, went wide in turn 3 of lap 1 and was momentarily halted on the hay bale crash wall. This let Rookie Justin Almon into the lead. Todd reeled in the youngster, making his move outside for the win on the run into the finish line.

The Support class was won by Jim Sanders who took a heat and Main. Jake Myers was the winner in the other heat. Kensei Matsudaira swept the 150 Mini Speedway class, though the ever-improving Ryder Schultz had him in his sight. Jason Fritze won the Sidecar Main as well as heat 2 with Robert & Laurie Curry taking heat 1.

With other 40 local businesses on board supporting the event and posters and promotion all over the small 30,000 population desert community, known for its military base, it looks like the ‘Duel in the Desert’ will continue in 2023.
