August 27, 2008 - Industry Speedway
By: Ryan Evans

Charlie “The Edge” Venegas ended his main-event drought by winning the Industry Speedway Scratch Main Event for the ninth time this season.

“Fast” Eddie Castro was first out of the gate but missed the corner and Venegas was glued to the inside in turn one and snapped up the lead. Jimmy Fishback and the rest of the field chased Venegas down the back straight. Venegas, without a main event victory in eight weeks after winning eight of the first nine, never made a mistake and cruised to the checkered flag. Fishback finished second, Shawn McConnell was third, Ricky Wells finished fourth, and Castro was fifth.

The heats commenced with Fishback beating Venegas. Wells used the outside to pass Jason Ramirez for the victory. McConnell held off Castro to win the next race. Bobby Schwartz defeated Brad Oxley, competing for the first time in nearly six years, in the final heat of the round.

McConnell began the second round by coming from the back for the win. Shaun Harmatiuk won the next race. Venegas passed Jon Stasiefski for the lead and the win in event 21. Round two ended with Castro getting by Tim Gomez for the victory.

Gomez started the final round by holding off Ramirez for the win. Brad Sauer was victorious over Castro in the next heat. Fishback cruised to victory in event 29. Oxley showed that he wasn’t completely rusty by scoring an impressive win over McConnell in the final heat. Oxley was leading Gomez for two laps in a runoff before the 19 year old cut underneath the two-time National Champion on the back straight to grab the lead and the win.

Venegas took the win in the first semi and was followed into the main by Wells, who passed Ramirez on the outside again for second. Fishback led the second semi before letting McConnell by on the final lap for the win. Fishback recovered to get second and the transfer to the main. Castro won the Last Chance to book the final spot in the main.

New York’s Casey Donholt, in California for the Under 21 National Championship, was dominant all night and won the Second Division Main Event. Rudy Laurer was second, Bryan Buffington finished third, and Justin Hassan was fourth.

Danny Baker led all four laps to win the Third Division Main Event. Bruce Marteney was second, Ron Mongenel finished third, and Chris Thomas was fourth.

A special “Young versus Old” Match Race was staged between nine year old Nicky Reimer and 76 year old Hugh Randolph. The riders entertained the crowd with a side-by-side battle for three laps before Reimer pulled away for the win.

National Champions Chris Jones and Jimmy Olsen led from start to finish and won the Sidecar Main Event. Bob Brayton and John DeFries finished second, Tommy Thornton and Steve Bumpus were third, Dave Alexander and Russell Green finished fourth, and Gerard Jackson and Dave German were fifth.
