NICOL ROARS TO BOTH TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL VICTORIES AT PERRIS!

Wolverhampton Wolves Team USA star Broc Nicol played the starring role in Saturday 18th of July’s race meeting at Perris Raceway, California. Nicol won both the Individual Main Event as well as top scoring for ‘Team Max’ who beat ‘Team Gino’ by 40-32 in the team racing portion.

The event, the second held at Perris without spectators due to Covid-19 health restrictions featured 16 riders in the Division 1 portion of the program. The two team Captains, Max Ruml and Gino Manzares drafted the teams with alternate picks three days before the event.. Each member of the 8 man teams had three programmed rides in the team portion, which was held over 12 heats. Then the top 8 points scorers contested Individual semi finals with the top two going to the Main Event.

It was Team Gino who took the lead first with a 4-2 in heat two, but Team Max bounced right back with a 5-1 in heat 3. After four shared 3-3 heats in a row, Team Max scored a crucial Heat 8 4-2 advantage, taking a 26-22 lead to the final round. Two further 4-2’s in heats 9 and 11 stretched the victory to 8 points.

Testimony to the strength in depth of the program was the fact that no rider was on a perfect score after the heats with Max Ruml, Broc Nicol, Luke Becker and Russell Green all tied on 8 points.

Semi Final #1 saw Max Ruml as the winner, Manzares passing Green to secure the second transfer. The irony here is that Manzares had been lent Green’s back up bike to use ahead of the meeting due to his own mechanical issues. Semi Final #2 had Nicol lead home his Wolves team mate Becker with Austin Novratil close in contention right behind.

Nicol got the best start in the final with Becker behind in second. Manzares got by Max for third place. Nicol held a safe lead but on lap three the Wolves ‘5-1’ was ended with Becker slowing down and retiring with mechanical issues. Nicol, Manzares, Max Ruml was the finishing order.

Plenty of other action occurred outside of Division 1. Kyle Cunningham continued his unbeaten run for the second race of his 500cc career, winning his two heats and the Division Two Main event. Mark Fillebrown and Rheten Todd took heat wins, with veteran Rudy Laurer winning the Consi. Brent Smith was perfect winning all Division Three races. Mike Lupo won a heat and the Vintage / Upright Main with Tom Settlemire taking the other heat.

Slater Lightcap and Justin Almon each took a 250cc Junior heat, Lightcap won the final. In 150cc Mini Speedway, the heats were handicapped. National Champ Levi Leutz won both of his with Nick Hohlbein taking the other. The riders were split into Divisions for the Main Events, Hohlbein won Division 1 while Kensei Matsudaira took Division 2. Harli Facchini won both Pee Wee heats but Matthew Hodge took the Final.

The team of Ace Kale and Thomas Jerglan won all three Sidecar races. AJ Kirkpatrick took a clean sweep in the Hooligan Class. Curtis Cannon won a 12 Man Flat Track Main event. Mini Bikes races were held on the TT track, Bob Tocco won the 150cc class, Neil Facchini the 125cc division.

Perris will continue its race program on August 15th with races planned once a month through December with the possibility of additional dates being added.
