Industry Hills Speedway Scratch Main Event at the tapes (inside - outside):
Gino Manzares, Max Ruml, Aaron Fox, Billy Janniro.
The finish was Ruml, Janniro, Manzares, Fox.

“Mad” Max Ruml scored his fourth consecutive Scratch Main Event victory in dramatic fashion on Haddick’s Towing Classic Car Night at Industry Hills Speedway.

Ruml had first selection of starting position for the main and he picked gate two. Gino Manzares had second choice and quickly took gate one. Aaron Fox chose gate three and that left Billy “The Kid” Janniro, making his first appearance of 2022 at Industry Hills Speedway, with gate four.

Ruml got a great start and clamped down on Manzares in turn one but Janniro was sweeping around the outside and found ample traction coming out of the second bend to take the lead. The 10-time AMA Speedway National Champion was so excited with his lead that he fist-pumped at the end of lap one. The race was far from over however as Ruml went to work on the leader. Janniro continued to lead through the second lap as Ruml was searching for grip on the outside. At the close of the penultimate lap Janniro was still leading but Ruml literally put his rear tire against the fence and found traction that gave enough traction to get to the leader’s outside shoulder and he found plenty more traction in turn one. Janniro straightened just a bit in turn one and that, coupled with Ruml’s corner speed handed the lead to the current AMA Speedway National Champion. Ruml controlled the last half-lap and crossed the finish line first with a fist-pump of his own. Janniro had to settle for second, Manzares was third, and Fox finished fourth.

Fox kicked off the evening with a victory over Under 21 National Champion Slater Lightcap. Ruml defeated 65-year-old legend and two-time National Champion Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz. Manzares beat “Fast” Eddie Castro in event three. Janniro passed Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell to end round one with a victory.

Round two began with Fox stalking New York native David Clark for three laps before slipping past him for the lead and the win. Lightcap made a great start ahead of Ruml to take the lead in event 13. Ruml pressured the 16-year-old for two laps before using the ample outside dirt to pass him on the back straight for the lead and his second victory. Shawn McConnell got the best start in event 14 but Manzares went around the outside on the back straight and raced away with the win. Janniro made it two victories in two races to finish the second round.

Shawn McConnell held off Lightcap to start the third round with a win. Fox beat Tim Gomez for his third straight win. Janniro remained perfect with a victory ahead of Castro. The final heat pitted undefeated riders Ruml and Manzares against each other. Ruml touched the tapes, though, and was penalized 20 yards for his infraction. Manzares matched the perfect scores of Fox and Janniro but it wasn’t without maximum effort from Ruml who made it interesting despite being assessed the handicap at the start.

Janniro made the best start in the first semi but drifted past the pole in turn one and Ruml cut underneath for the lead. Janniro was unable to pay him back but he would still join Ruml in the main. Fox led the second semi until Manzares charged up the inside at the end of lap one and snatched the lead. Fox then had to contend with Shawn McConnell snapping at his heels and focused his effort on protecting his position and the transfer to the main. Manzares won and Fox held back Shawn McConnell to transfer to the main as well.

Shawn McConnell led the Scratch Consolation from start to finish despite the best efforts of Gomez, who had won the previous two Scratch Consolations. Castro came home third.

Barry Weiss, star of the television show “Storage Wars” and a longtime fan of speedway, put up $500 for a Last Man Out Challenge with Fox, Manzares, Janniro, and Ruml. Janniro was the first racer eliminated. Fox was next to go and that left Manzares and Ruml. To change things up Weiss had the last two start from 50 yards behind the starting line. Ruml led both laps to take the Challenge victory.

Harold Hartke was the initial leader of the Second Division Main Event but he had Kevin Fiore right behind him. Hartke led through lap one but his line kept getting wider. He went to wide exiting turn four the second time and Fiore pounced through the opening on the inside. Kevin Fiore didn’t look back from there and was first to the checkered flag. 17-year-old Andrew Russell also got past Hartke to take second. Eloy Medellin fell early in the race and was credited with fourth.

Alan Bernklau made the best start in the Third Division Main Event but Isaiah Canales took the lead as they entered turn three. Canales was then chased by the previous week’s winner Jordan Vanderham. Canales kept his composure through the balance of the race and was first across the finish line. Vanderham was second, Jim Sanders finished third, and Bernklau was fourth.

Charlie Trana made it three-for-three this season by winning the Junior 250 Main Event. Levi Leutz finished second, Jose Navarrete was third, and Nick Dunn finished fourth.

Brandon Soto led the Mini 150 Main Event for one lap before Ryder Schultz overcame his 50-yard handicap and took the lead as they entered the first bend the second time. Schultz pulled away for the win with Soto holding on to second and Kayd Fiore finishing third.

Five competitors were in the Pee Wee Main Event with four lining up at the tapes and Hudson Jones starting with a large handicap. Roxen McConnell led from the tapes but Hudson Jones was quickly knifing through the field. Hudson Jones stormed past the leader as they raced down the back straight on the second lap. Jones ran off into the horizon and scored a comfortable victory. Roxen McConnell was second, Jenson Horn finished third, Max Maldonado was fourth, and Jett Ferre finished fifth.

National Champions Joe Jones and Tom Summers continued their dominant 2022 season by scoring their third Sidecar Main Event victory in as many tries.
