MANZARES DELIVERS A MASTER CLASS WHILST BANDITS & WOLVES WIN BIG IN TEAM ROUND 2!

Former Ipswich and Scunthorpe rider Gino Manzares dropped just one point in 6 rides to claim the individual victory at Perris Raceway on Saturday April 3rd. The event also featured Round 2 of the 2021 team racing Championship with the Bakersfield Bandits now topping the league table heading into the final round on May 22nd.

Team SOS Wolves 42 – Huntington Beach Heathens 25.
The first ever California version of the fierce British Midlands rivalry went the way of the Wolves who demolished their opponents by 17 points. An opening 5-1 by Broc Nicol and Michael Wells was further assisted by a Dillon Ruml / Wells 5-0 in heat 3 after Austin Novratil’s bike failed at the start and Mike Miller fell whilst in an impressive second place. After the lead was further extended to 12 points, a Novratil double point tactical joker win in heat 6 brought the gap back to 9. However, two 5-1s in heats 8 and 9, including a magnificent father and son 5-1 from Lawrence and Aidan McNutt saw the Wolves home for their first win of the season.
Wolves 42: Dillon Ruml 9 (3), Michael Wells 8+3 (4), Aidan McNutt 8+3 (4), Broc Nicol 8 (3), Lawrence McNutt 5 (4), Kyle Cunningham 4 (3), Rider Replacement for Sammy Tetrault.
Heathens 25: Austin Novratil 9 (3), Sebastian Palmese 6 (3), Rohn Zellner 5+1 (3), Royal Adderson 2 (3), Mark Fillebrown 2 (3), Mike Miller 1 (3), Sara Cords 0 (3).

Perris Pirates 29 – Bakersfield Bandits 32
The re-formed Bandits edged home by 3 points in a closely fought match with the home track Pirates. Gino Manzares was immaculate with a 4-ride maximum include a superb 5-1 with Wilbur Hancock in heat 9 for the home track team. However, 8+1 from the unbeaten Blake Cronkrite and 8 from Max Ruml provided the top end power the Bandits needed. An early 6-point lead after 3 heats had the Bandits ahead, but 4-2 heat wins in races 6 and 7 brought the Pirates within 3. A 5-1 in heat 9 as detailed above put the home team one ahead with two races to go but the advantage gained was reversed when Rudy Laurer and Cronkrite hit back with a Bandits maximum in heat 10. This just left Bandit’s captain Max Ruml with the job of winning heat 11 to secure another Bakersfield victory.
Pirates 29: Gino Manzares 12 (4), Wilbur Hancock 6+1 (4), Ron Davis 4 (3), Brad Moreau 3 (3), David Newsham 2+2 (3), Rees Todd 2+1 (4), Rider Replacement for Eddie Castro.
Bandits 32: Blake Cronkrite 8+1 (3), Max Ruml 8 (3), Rudy Laurer 6 (3), Rheten Todd 5 (3), Brad Sauer 2+1 (3), Jake Myers 2 (3), Robbie Sauer 1+1 (3).

League Table (after 2 of 3 rounds)
Bakersfield Bandits 2 wins (+10 race points +/-)
Team SOS Wolves 1 win (+10 race points +/-)
HB Heathens 1 win (- 14 race points +/-)
Perris Pirates 0 wins (-6 race points)

Final round matches May 22 – Bandits V Heathens, Wolves V Pirates.

Other Races
After the team events the top 8 Division riders contested individual semi finals and main event outside of the team races. Semi 1 saw the unbeaten Manzares in a blockbuster race with Max Ruml, Novratil and the impressive Wilbur Hancock, in only his 3rd 500cc race at age 15. It was Ruml who got the nod over Manzares as the race began. Novratil mounted his expected spectacular challenge, which unfortunately ended after lap two with bike trouble. Positions stayed as is from there. Semi 2 has another unbeaten rider in Dillon Ruml but he was headed home by Broc Nicol. The ever-improving Sebastian Palmese ended another consistent and impressive night in third with the equally impressive Michael Wells in fourth.

The Main was an epic on paper and it sure lived up to those expectations. It looked like Max Ruml got the nod over Nicol heading into turn 1 but it was Manzares with an incredible outside sweep around the entire field who led as they came out of turn 2. Max Ruml executed his expected challenge right away whilst Nicol moved by Dillon Ruml for third at the end of lap one. Though positions remained the same for the rest of the race, all four riders were extremely close throughout. Manzares took the checkered flag to the delight of the fans who were welcomed back to Perris for the first time in over a year.

The Red White and Blue match race helmet saw holder Broc Nicol defeat contender Sebastian Palmese 2-0 in the two lap races. Nicol will keep the helmet with a third straight win if he defends the title at Bakersfield next Saturday April 10.

Flat Track rider Royal Adderson took a three ride sweep to win the Support Class. Slater Lightcap also duly obliged, going undefeated in the 250cc Junior class. The 150cc Mini Speedway class had two thrilling Handicap heats, Levi Leutz and Kensei Matsudaira being the winners. All riders started from the line in the Main event, which was won by Leutz. Ryder Manzares, son of Gino won the Pee Wee Division, with Morgan Myers winning the Pee Wee Division 2 class. Kevin Kale and Anthony Hernandez were victors in all three Sidecar events.

Perris now has a 7-week break till the May 22nd team finals but attention now switches to California’s newest track at Kern County Raceway Bakersfield. Three events will be held over a 5-weekend period on April 10th and 24th and then May 8th. The races will form the ‘Spring Triple Crown series.’ Each event will feature a different race format with the top four division riders on points racing off for a $1,000 to win heat to round out the series.
